Novelists writing comics is nothing new but I am curious if there authors you tried because of comics. I myself discovered Greg Rucka, Duane Swierczynski, Victor Gischler and Charlie Huston because of the comics they wrote for Marvel and DC. Who have you tried?

Not quite the same situation, but I discovered Tolkien and Robert E Howard because people kept mentioning them in the letters pages of Marvel comics.
