I get it, favorite characters can be more loved than immediate family members sometimes.
But I have run into some over zealous rabid rude fans on message boards. Which character's fans to you find the rudest/abrasive/pretentious etc?

My fandom is passionate
Your fandom is enthusiastic
Their fandom is strident

Depends on when and where you look.
I had someone rip me to shreds once for not liking Hal Jordan.
I guess rudeness depends upon the eye of the beholder, but I have no doubt the loudest fans are the ones whose favorite character is not in the spotlight.
A bat! That's it! It's an omen.. I'll shall become a bat!

Prolly the character with the oldest male base.
Beefing up the old home security, huh?You bet yer ass.
Well it is Hal Jordan, you obviously deserved it. (Sorry, cheap joke)
To answer the questions, as the saying goes, "Assholes, not an endangered species." I'm sure while we try to nice and polite, there are times we ourselves are the jerks while other times someone else is the jerk.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:
Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.
All characters have them and times where we are them. But for me I tend to but heads with Jason Todd fans a lot.
"It's too bad she won't live! But then again, who does? - Gaff Blade Runner
"In a short time, this will be a long time ago." - Werner Slow West
"One of the biggest problems in the industry is apathy right now." - Dan Didio Co-Publisher of I Wonder Why That Is Comics
Rudeness has to be differentiated between face-to-face interactions and on the Internet. The former is tougher, but the latter is easy (also more cowardly) to do.

Archie fans can be generously be described as being absolutely Satanic is their devotion to the red headed malcontent. Cathy fans are equally fanatical but less overweight.
