"The Batman is Gotham City. I will watch him. Study him. And when I know him and why he does not kill, I will know this city. And then Gotham will be MINE!"-BANE
"We're monsters, buddy. Plain and simple. I don't dress it up with fancy names like mutant or post-human; men were born crueler than Apes and we were born crueler than men. It's just the natural order of things"-ULTIMATE SABRETOOTH
So if we can get more of this Batman, that’s be great.
Is funny. Based on the last cliffhanger, I thought that Taylor was going to write a story about the return of Thomas Wayne which would have been logical considering his connection to the character (Mind you, Taylor wrote Earth 2 Thomas who was different from Flashpoint Thomas but still).
That being said, this is still an immensely satisfying story. Taylor uses his expertise at creating great moments to deliver an emotional dynamic between Bruce and Alfred that captures their relationship perfectly and culminates in a pretty appropriate tone. Schmidt's artwork is amazing too.
Seriously, Taylor has given me the most entertainment that I've gotten from Batman in a while and makes me realize that he would have been a much better fit at following Snyder's "big blockbuster" direction than King.
A nice breather with some sweet Alfred moments. Would have much rather had King used this to continue his story though.
I enjoyed the story, it was a nice Alfred story. Art was so so, but not bad for an annual.
Pulls: Batman, Detective Comics, SiKtC, Catwoman, Nightwing, Titans, Godzilla, Wonder Woman, Batman & Robin, Brave and the Bold, No/One, Kill your Darlings, and Deviant.
My runs: Batman #230-, and Detective #420-
King says he wants to make a more human and relatable batman. Well Taylor in one issue does that point better than king in his 61 issues. To busy to make a nonesensical romance with both characters out of character. Tomasi and Taylor know how to write batman well. Jones knows how to write catwoman King not so much
I LOVED this issue. The whole Father's Day thing at the end was perfect. Great story about Alfred and what he means to Bruce. Sometimes Bruce takes him for granted. It was nice for someone to finally call him on it.
So i see on my facebook feed that this book is blowing up and is apparently the best thing that DC has put out since, well, ever. can someone spoil me?
Thought it was very moving. The villain's backstory and motivations were pretty painfully generic and cliched, but that was supposed to only be a backdrop, so it wasn't too big a problem. The only real issue I had was that this is ostensibly part of the Tom King Batman run, and this Batman is NOT the one that King is writing. I don't think Tom King's Batman would ever be able to take a day off to let Alfred recover (even though he should). This felt much more like Tynion's Batman, who hugs his partners when they grieve.
Art was really great! Matched really well with the warmth of the story.

Nice father day story.
I'll never get used to "Cassandra and Duke to patrol the city in my stead".
I'm missing the old times when a Robin (or a Nightwing) was the one to cover for Batman.
Pretty touching and all-around well-crafted issue. Makes me hope Tom Taylor will work on more Batman-related projects in the future.
