True Communism is partly defined by the absence of government altogether, which is also a big part of why it doesn't work at the state level (so the truth is there has never been a true Communist state).

I assumed that having goverment goons showing up on your front door, stealing most of your stuff, and shooting you in the head if you object WAS True Communism.

Marx did write about moving past the need for government - and the 'Communist' movements that sprang up in his lifetime were so different than what he wrote about that Marx saying 'I am not a communist' is fairly well heard of (although it might be a paraphrase rather than a direct quote).

What most people consider communism is better described as Totalitarian Socialism. What you describe is more like Kleptocracy, which can happen even in capitalist countries. In the US old people can be declared mentally incompetent in absentia, and have all their stuff auctioned off against their will to pay for the nursing home they get forced into. In addition to Civil Assett Forfeiture, which in practice only involves a police officer insisting it must be suspicious without having to actually prove any crime. By going to civil court, they force you to prove innocence, often disallowing you to have a lawyer and the testimony of the officer is practically considered evidence while yours is considered unreliable.
