Default What was the point of Extermination?

Now that the event involving the O5 is over, I am left wondering what the real point of the whole thing was? Was it really necessary to make an event surrounding the O5 finally going home? And, why did the original Cable need to die? Also, how does all of this connect to the reveal at the end?

    I am so confused.

Send the 05 back, and bring Cyclops back.

Brisson will probably delve into why Cable had to die in the new X-Force book.

Send the O5 back home and bring Cyclops back.
Also Brisson needed an excuse to write X-Force book, and I don't blame him, I really missed the team.

Also, they kinda took the most sensible approach, by isolating this storyline to a mini and not making it a line-wide event like Messiah Complex or Second Coming.

-Caps off the X-Men Color books & ResurreXion as a whole
-Sends O5 back home but doesn't waste their impact here
    -Sets up X-Force
-Sets up Ahab and Rachel as future vilains
-Clean up whoever was left on Blue

I don't believe there was a point. The O5's departure could have taken place in a one-shot or the final arc of X-Men Blue and Cable didn't really need to die, so to speak.

this had been building for 5 years. it's comics, so they could make money off of it if it was an event. had it taken place in x-men blue, i probably would have passed on it.

    - rounding up the O5 story in a awesome way
    - getting rid of loose ends
    - the ending of Bloodstorm, Mimic and Cable
    - end of the coloured books Red, Gold and Blue.
    - installing a great new villain, Ahab
    - giving Rachel the dark future she was ending up anyway, being a Hound.
    -introducing Young Cable
    - return of Cyclops

So a lot of stuff happened that is major important. Best mini since a long time.

The MAIN reason nobody’s mentioned yet: Make Marvel money.
Cyclops was SO DAMN RIGHT, BABY
Pull list: X-23, Mr. & Mrs. X, Extermination, Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider, Uncanny X-Men
Have been informed that the Black Swans are "only seeking female members, but thank you very much for your time"

He actually did some rewrites part way through to change the ending - X-Force getting their own book wasn't part of the original plan.

Yeah, that's what companies need to do, making money duh- huh. They gotta be paid for their work. At least this time they did it in a great way.

To quote myself in the spoiler thread:

Quote Originally Posted by Kurolegacy View Post
Now that the dust has settled a bit, I can honestly say that, aside from bringing Cyclops back, I didn’t like this story at all. Firstly, I hate stories that only exist to fill an editorial mandate which is obvious considering how the story with the O5 changed from the start of Blue to the end. The whole thing just feels like a waste considering that, Jean picking up Jeen’s TK move and maybe Beast knowing magic, it changes nothing considering they are already well grown into who they are. The memories of their younger counterparts isn’t going to change that. If they were gonna send them back, it should have had some kind of soft reset to the X-Men’s timeline for the better. Otherwise what was the point?

Secondly Cable’s, Mimic’s and Bloodstorm’s deaths were completely pointless, with Bloodstorm’s just feeling like they didn’t know what to do with her so instead just killed her and Cable’s death being unnecessary. Mimic meanwhile literally existed only for spare parts. Then Kid Cable being let off the hook by Jean despite the fact that his plan doesn’t change that he needlessly killed Cable.

Thirdly Rachel’s fate. Considering that the villain was Ahab, it would have been great to see her overcoming her past demons and showing that Ahab has no hold on her anymore as she’s grown since then. Instead, the just turn her back into a hound and leave her at that. And in spite of something like that being a major issue, the X-Men are just gonna leave her to her fate until a writer decides to use her again (and people talk about the Avengers treatment of mutants). It really just shows that Marvel was just using her as Jean’s replacement and have no idea what to do with her now that she’s back.

Lastly, this entire story was just everyone running circles around the X-Men and then being criminally incompetent. For example, if you know the twins are the cause of the hounds and they require touching, why aren’t you having a telekinetic keep them off of people? Instead, they kept throwing more people into the path of them. This was not a flattering story for the X-Men at all.
