Movie #144/ New Movie #93/ 2019 Movie #11/ Seen In Theaters #16: Joker
This film is interesting beyond the larger controversy. It is a story that borrows heavily from 1970s/ 1980s crime dramas, but does get to its own story of a pathetic man who finds success doing monstrous things. Joaquin Phoenix’s main performance is terrific, as he blends together multiple personas: the troubled Arthur, his fantasy version of himself and his own take on one of the great and comic book villains.

    Movie #145/ 1980s Movie #11/ BFI Top 100 #4/ Criterion Edition/ Channel #31: Withnail and I
A different than usual take on the road trip as a struggling actor and his roommate travel from London to the British lakeside, facing misunderstandings and a perverted uncle. Richard Grant shines as the self-destructive Withnail.
    9/10

Movie #146/ New Movie #94/ 1960s Film #12/ Nation’s Best #2/ Spanish Language Film #4/ Criterion Edition #32: Memories of Underdevelopment
Consistently rated one of the best Cuban films ever, it takes an unusual perspective at the revolution, through the eyes of a successful middle-aged man who generally wants no part in it. It seems surprisingly relevant in the current culture where middle-class people (especially men) are trying to make sense of new standards.
    10/10

Movie #147/ 1970s Movie #11/ Best Picture Winner #2/ AFI Top 100 #3: Annie Hall
This take on a failed relationship still works on so many levels. It’s really witty, allowing Allen his best starring role, but also demonstrating some self-awareness in his many flaws. Diane Keaton is fantastic as a female lead who goes from the main character’s love interest to surpassing him.
    10/10

    Movie #148/ New Movie #95/ 1930s Film #12/ Nation’s Best #3/ Criterion Edition #33: Limite
This is a rare film I can’t really rate after seeing it once (the only other time I’ve said that was with the original Birth of a Nation.) It’s an odd narrative with striking visuals but a story that’s intentionally hard to follow.
    Unrated

    Movie #149/ New Movie #96/ 1960s Film #12/ Nation’s Best #4/ Spanish Language Film #5/ Criterion Edition #34: Viridiana
It’s BuŮuel’s masterpiece so it’s probably not that surprising that it takes some weird turns, but from the initial story of a novice about to take her vows visiting her deeply troubled uncle, it goes in a very different direction, pissing off an entirely new set of people in the process, while still telling the excellent story of a woman trying to make sense of the world and to do good according to her faith.
    10/10

    Movie #150/ New Movie #97/ 1970s Film #12/ Nation’s Best #5/ Russian Film #2/ Criterion Edition/ Channel #35: The Mirror
Tarkovsky’s take on the memories of a relatively ordinary man, shifting from the present of 1970s Russia to his childhood in the 1930s is strange but beautiful, creating a fully developed character we barely even see, while allowing Margarita Terekhova to depict two nuanced women in his life: his mother and his ex-wife.
    10/10

Movie #151/ 1960s Movie #11/ Best Picture Winner #3/ BFI Top 100 #5: A Man For All Seasons
I’ve been a bit disappointed to see this on some lists of the worst Best Picture winners. It’s one of the best British costume dramas, and depicts some important philosophical ideas extraordinarily well. Paul Scofield’s Thomas More is probably historically inaccurate (the real man was more of a historical zealot), but he captures well a man trying to find some alternative to his conscience and the demands of his good friend the king, whose careful silence does lead to one loophole.
    10/10

    Movie #152/ 1930s Movie #11/ AFI Top 100 #4: A Night at the Opera
It’s Marx Brothers, so it’s damn funny. Duck Soup might have been a bit more relevant, but it doesn’t have the stateroom scene.
    10/10

    Movie #153/ 1980s Movie #11/ Best Picture Winner #4/ AFI Top 100 #5: Platoon
Stone’s masterpiece is a powerful take on the experiences of a young soldier, who slowly realizes the biggest challenge in Vietnam isn’t the Vietcong but his own side’s descent into madness and compromise. Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger deserved their Oscar nominations as rival mentors, but this was one fantastic cast.
    10/10

Movie #154/ New Movie #98/ 1930s Movie #3/ Best Picture Winner #5: You Can’t Take It With You
This Best Picture winner is definitely lesser Kapra, worth seeing for the chemistry of Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur, as well as the development of themes that are better handled in It Happened One Night, Mr Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s almost like someone else’s pastiche of the great director.

    Movie #155/ New Movie #99/ 2019 Movie #12/ Seen In Theaters #17: It-Chapter Two
This is definitely a step down from the first part. There are just moments that donít ring true, but I wonder if it really even could have worked or if it was fatally flawed from the beginning. Maybe splitting It into two different films largely in different eras doesnít work because a monster isnít as tough when weíve seen it get beaten by some middle school students, and people pushing 40 but acting like kids just seems kinda sad. Bill Haderís performance is pretty strong; immaturity works best for an emotionally stunted stand-up comic.
    6/10

Movie #156/ New Movie #100/ 1940s Movie #12/ Criterion Channel/ Edition #35: The Body Snatcher
I keep watching this Val Lewton adaptation and thinking Iíd like to see a stronger defense of body-snatching from a medical ethics perspective. Itís an interesting take on a young medical studentís moral growth, with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi as side characters; their interactions are a highlight.
    8/10

Movie #157/ New Movie #101/ 1990s Movie #13: Event Horizon
I saw this based on reviews in an Empire podcast discussion, which primed me to appreciate it on a higher level since I got the impression it was critically successful. It really wasnít (6.7 on IMDB, 27% on Rotten Tomatoes) but it felt like it couldíve been. Itís a weird blend of several things that are creepy by themselves, but work well together. Itís bad enough having monsters in space where survival is already an uncertain prospect and any mistake can kill. Add to this heroes in an unfamiliar setting experiencing strange hallucinations. And then a religious element. Yeah, itís sometimes silly. But the designs make up for it.
    8/10

    Movie #158/ 1970s Movie #14: Halloween
Itís one of the best-done ďslasher stalks teenagersĒ films. The main reason Iím not rating it higher is that it doesnít really have anything to say, although Michael Myers is an effective antagonist, and Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance are decent examples of horror movie cliche heroes; the girl who doesnít know sheís in a horror movie, and the expert upset that the threat isnít being taken seriously.
    8/10

Movie #159/ New Movie #102/ 2019 Movie #13/ Seen In Theaters #18: Zombieland 2- Double Tap
Itís a decent action comedy that builds on the cast dynamics from the first film, and adds some good new characters. Itís sometimes a bit cheap and ridiculous, but it mixes humor with legitimate life and death stakes pretty well.
    7/10

    Movie #160/ New Movie #103/ 2018s Movie #12: Halloween
The sequel deals effectively with the legacy of the babysitter murders, while also offering chills in its own right. Itís not as strong as the original, and we are consistently aware that the bad guy is an elderly man, but it may have more to say about trauma.
    7/10

Movie #161/ New Movie #104/ 1940s Movie #13/ Criterion Channel/ Edition #36: The Ghost Ship
This Val Lewton film disappeared from for public view for decades following a lawsuit, so itís relatively obscure. Itís on some top horror films lists, but it doesnít really feel like one. It isnít horror any more than Platoon or Training Day, or any movie about a young man suspicious of a superior. It is a decent drama on that topic, especially with a bad guy who is a bit more sympathetic than one would expect. The answer to whether the captain is a monster is more complicated than just yes or no.
    8/10

Movie #162/ New Movie #105/ 1940s Movie #14/ Criterion Channel/ Edition #37: The Seventh Victim
Thanks to a Criterion channel subscription and the short length of these films, Iím covering a lot of Val Lewton this month. This one gets legitimately creepy, and serves as a highlight of the producerís sense of atmosphere. The satanism plot is a bit silly, although the guilt about lesbianism in the 1940s provides more drama.
    8/10

Movie #163/ New Movie #106/ 1940s Movie #15/ Criterion Channel/ Edition #38: The Leopard Man
This take on the hunt for a leopard in Mexico seems a bit like a proto-version of Jaws; a dangerous predator is hunting down residents of a sleepy community, and the authorities donít want to disrupt business as usual. Itís a Val Lewton film, so there is a tremendous sense of atmosphere, and a twist about the bad guy, although the discovery isnít executed very well
    7/10

    Movie #164/ New Movie #107/ 1980s Movie #13: Friday the 13th Part 2
I mustíve had a deprived childhood to miss out on the shlocky Friday the 13th films when I might have enjoyed them the most; all Iíve seen so far is the first, so itís interesting to finally see Jason as the killer, albeit a different kind of murderer than the pop culture figure he becomes thanks to the sequels. Heís not that effective a bad guy when heís a disfigured loner who lives by himself, although there is a decent campfire ghost story aspect to everything; something the film is very aware of.
    6/10

    Movie #165/ New Movie #108/ 1940s Movie #16/ Criterion Channel/ Edition #39: I Walked With a Zombie
This Val Lewton film gets interesting for what it says about some thorny topics like colonialism, although the story of a young nurse falling in love with a man who has a dark secret about his marriage is rather derivative of Jane Eyre and Rebecca, elevated by the Caribbean environment.
    8/10

Movie #166/ New Movie #109/ 1970s Movie #15/ Italian Language Film #1: Deep Red
Dario Argentoís giallo horror has a terrific sense of atmosphere, and a lot of decent concepts that work together pretty well, starting with a psychic sensing the presence of a murderer, and an excellent example of a major clue hiding in plain sight.
    9/10

Movie #167/ New Movie #110/ 1930s Movie #17: The Black Cat
A rare flop for Universal horror, this film was also notoriously edited and censored, which may be why itís so short and disjointed (what remains is quite creepy especially the villainís marital life). Itís still a satisfying story about a bland young American couple caught in a conflict between Bela Lugosiís foreign former prisoner of war and Boris Karloffís mad scientist. Future noir master Edgar Ullmer provides a terrific sense of atmosphere, with settings at a universal budget. Danny Reid had an interesting review about how this is all a metaphor about how Americans just donít understand the nastiness of the first world war.
    8/10
