Bryan Hitch gave Hal a beard in his short lived JLA series

I get it - it's not an impressive visual, but I can get behind it for this because Earth One is a more real world take and this is more science fiction than superhero.

He does. Sharp has done amazing on this series. One small pet peeve I have with him though is that when he posts Hal art, he often refers to Hal as being "from another era". All of the major characters in DC and Marvel are from another era. I get that TGL is inspired by the more classic GL stories as opposed to the Johns era, but there's no need to keep suggesting that Hal is somehow an "oldschool" character, especially when a good portion of the major DC heroes were created before he was. We don't see Superman artists talk about drawing Clark Kent to look like an oldschool investigative journalist just because he was created 80 years ago. It's no big deal, but I think there's no need to point this out so often.

I think it's because Hal is definitely made from the mold as those "Right Stuff" pilots - a lot moreso than the "Top Gun" guys. When Hal is portrayed like those more modern airmen, it doesn't seem like as much like him. Perhaps when the new "Top Gun" comes out, that movie will forge a new mold in the consciousness and people will think of pilots in a new light and base Hal off of that ... ?

Personally it doesn't bother me. It makes him distinct in these times, but it takes the right writer to know what to do with that kind of character.

To be fair, a lot of artists default to Clark looking like Christopher Reeve.

I didn't hate it. (Except when EVS gave him flowing Fabio hair) Did not like that it was too white and boring without the coat. Mostly, it was a wasted opportunity to do something fun and different with Hal.

I like it. I think it's a cool and fashionable design. And I like the long hair too. I still think it's a pity that the long hair only lasted for one year before they cut it.
