Well, I think, maybe, the God of Light one-shot was so good because the ending had already been fixed by Geoff Johns, which is Hal gave up being God and went to look after Batman. And King's narrative style just fit in the story well.

Even so, King did say he enjoyed writing the characters:

I mean they’re a joy to write, I love writing them. That’s almost what I miss the most about this book is writing those two. Booster is the most fun character in comics, except maybe Hal Jordan.

I can imagine Hal sitting there holding the Lantern with a determined face looking it over for a few minutes, turns to the camera. "I have no idea what this thing is."
