Default The Early Years: DC's Best of the Thirties

What are your favorite stories (or arcs, if such a thing existed then) of DC's earliest years, 1935-1939?

Aside from Superman and Batman stories (in Action Comics and Detective Comics), how many are readily available to the average reader?

Excellent question, and one of the reasons I asked. Aside from the earliest Superman and Batman stories all I could dig up among my own stuff is the first Slam Bradley story from Detective Comics #1 (1937) and some Scribbly stories from All-American Comics #6 (1939).

OK I'll take a stab at this. There are over 30 Superman stories from 1938-39, and I don't really remember any of them, aside from the first. There are only 8 Batman stories from the 30s though. I'm a fan of "The Batman Meets Dr. Death" from Detective Comics #29 (and its follow-up in the next issue).

Off the top of my head, that would be my favorite of the ones I have read.

Anyone ever read any of the early Zatara stories? Have they been reprinted ever anywhere?

I predict the Golden Age Zatara comics will be collected (Maybe in a Golden Age Omnibus), when the Justice League DARK movie finally comes out. (The Justice League Dark film will obviously star Zatara's daughter Zatanna.)

I did see that there is an ARCHIVES edition that collects NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1939 so there is at least ONE story out there.

Sandman also debuted during this period.

And these are collected in an Archives edition as well.

Sandman and Zatara's appearances in the New York World's Fair seem to be better colored than their appearances in their ongoing titles.
