It looks like Al Ewing is connecting the transformation of Galan into Galactus and the cosmic ray bombardment of the Fantastic Four with the gamma ray irradiation of Bruce Banner.

In Fantastic Four #81, Crystal mentions she is the same age as Sue was when the FF were founded, but then in Fantastic Four #82, Reed says Crystal is a minor. Did a teenage Sue get engaged to a Reed Richards who was old enough to have been a vet in a war that ended 16 years prior?
The quotes are another brilliant example of how Stan Lee often skipped over or neglected details to advance a story. Remember Bob Banner? But there was no way Sue wasn't an adult flying up into the rocket. She was Johnny's guardian after their parents' death. Looking at Crystal's age, I can easily imagine her to be a minor (16-17) when first introduced. Personally, I'd earn a no-prize by saying Crystal meant she was Johnny's age.
