Smile Rick Jones CAPTAIN MARVEL and Marlo Chandler Appreciation 2019

    Rick Jones

A scrappy, rebellious orphan, Rick Jones stumbled into the test site for the Gamma Bomb
and inadvertently caused Bruce Banner to be caught in the blast while trying to save Rick, transforming Banner into the Hulk.
Rick became the Hulk's closest confidant, a member of the Avengers
and a friend and sidekick to heroes like Captain America, Captain Mar-Vell and Rom.

    CAPTAIN MARVEL

Cloned from the DNA of the Kree warrior Mar-Vell,
Genis-Vell was implanted with false memories making him believe he was instead Starfox's son.
He was then artificially aged so that he'd be ready to face Mar-Vell's enemies.
Later, he inherits the title of Captain Marvel.

    Marlo Chandler

Marlo is the wife of Rick Jones and former lover of the Hulk.
Due to her relationship with Rick, she has often found herself in several superhero adventures and cosmic conflicts.

When he was a teenager, Rick was the only one who knew that Bruce Banner was the secret identity of the incredible Hulk.

    Avengers #3 Jan 1964
    "The Avengers meet Sub-Mariner!"
At their next meeting, the Avengers decide they need to find the Hulk before he causes more trouble.
Iron Man uses his image projector device to communicate with the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man
and the X-Men to ask if they have spotted him, but he has no luck.
Thor comes up with the smart idea of asking Rick Jones to help find the Hulk.
They contact him and Rick sets out into the desert to an area where he could be.

A short while later, Rick discovers the Hulk and leads him to a cave they had used in the past as a refuge.

There, Rick operates a machine that transforms the Hulk back into Bruce Banner.
While asleep, stressful thoughts cause Banner to revert to his Hulk-state and escape.

Rick Jones contacts the Avengers, alerting them to the situation and they travel to the desert to stop him getting out of hand.
After a brief battle, the Hulk escapes onto a passing train and with the help of an empty train carriage,
some industrial cable, and a couple of bags of flour, manages to elude the team.
After laying low, he reaches the sea and is eventually taken onto a ship on the brink of exhaustion.

Under the sea, Namor the Sub-Mariner watches the scene. After the Hulk leaves the ship, the Sub-Mariner meets him on a small island.
After a short fight, Namor suggests they team up and fight the humans together, as they each bear a grudge against humanity.
They form an uneasy alliance, each untrusting of the other, and issue a challenge to the Avengers: to battle at the Rock of Gibraltar!
The villains use old World War II weaponry to attack the Avengers, but Iron Man deflects the shells with his repulsor rays.
Namor disables Iron Man by firing an emery dust pellet at him, clogging up the joints in his armour.
Thor holds the duo at bay while the Wasp finds a tank of oxygen, which is used to blow the dust away and bring Iron Man back into the fight.
The Avengers chase their enemies through the tunnels. Namor plans to use an old air raid siren he has converted into a weapon,
but is caught by Giant-Man and the battle continues. Both the Hulk and Sub-Mariner attempt to lift Thor's hammer but are unable to do so.
At an inopportune moment, the stress causes Hulk to change back into Banner when Namor needs his help the most, and is forced to flee.
Namor, without help from the Hulk, is quickly outmatched and narrowly escapes into the ocean.

Ah yes. Peter David took over from Al Milgrom as writer.
The to me very cool thing Milgrom did before David became the writer is that he re-introduced the grey Hulk in

    Incredible Hulk #324 Oct 1986

The last time the grey Hulk appeared was

    Incredible Hulk #1 May 1962

To me this was so cool because for nearly 25 years whenever they re-told the Hulk's origin he was depicted as green instead of grey.

    Marvel Team-Up #16 Dec 1973
"Beware the Basilisk My Son!" First appearance of the Basilisk.
Captain Marvel has sent his partner Rick Jones to New York City

after he detected a Kree energy source of the long-lost Alpha Stone, a powerful emerald crystal.
At that very moment at a museum, a thief named Basil Elks eyes the mysterious stone.
Breaking the display case, he removes the coveted object.
He thinks about how this will prove to the other convicts in prison that Basil Elks,
who they jokingly referred to as Basilisk, was a criminal in his own right.
His thoughts are interrupted when he is caught red-handed by a security guard.
Before Basil can draw his gun, the officer fires and through a twist of fate strikes the Alpha Stone.
The gem is shattered by the bullet, releasing energies that transform Basil into a green-skinned form.
The frightened officer tries to flee, but when Elks tells him to freeze,
he is surprised when his eyes fire energy that freezes the guard in his tracks.
Realizing what he has done, Basil looks in the mirror and is amazed by his transformation.
Realizing that he can transmute matter with his eye beams, Basil reshapes a suit of armor into a costume
and decides to take on the moniker that has taunted him during his criminal career -- Basilisk.

Not far away, Peter Parker is heading down the streets in the hopes of catching the late show at the local movie theater.
As he passes the museum he witnesses one of the walls blowing out and Basilisk departing the scene.
Realizing that this could be trouble, Peter slips into some bushes so he can change into Spider-Man and pursue this new menace.
When the web-slinger confronts this new villain, he discovers that his foe's eye blasts are powerful.
Furious at this surprise attack, Basilisk decides that he will begin his new criminal career by destroying Spider-Man.
While the hero is stunned, Rick Jones happens on the scene.
Seeing that Spider-Man is at the mercy of his foe, Jones claps his armbands allowing Captain Marvel to trade places with him.

Although Captain Marvel has the element of surprise, Basilisk uses his powers to melt the concrete under the heroes feet.
It takes his power of levitation to break free and resume the fight.
Basilisk realizes that he can use his powers to rocket himself into the air and tries to escape.
Before Mar-Vell can stop him, the villain uses his powers to entrap the hero in ice.
The Captain manages to break free before he can fall to the ground, but by this point, Basilisk has escaped.

Spider-Man thanks Captain Marvel for the assist and learns that the Alpha Stone is one of two ancient Kree weapons.
Some time ago, the Alpha and Omega Stones were taken into space to be destroyed.
However, one Kree soldier sought their power for himself. But, instead of gaining ultimate power,
the two stones caused the ship to explode and they were lost in space, until now when the Alpha Stone turned up on Earth.
Fearing that Basilisk might find the Omega Stone and increase his power, the two heroes agree to team-up and hunt down their foe.
The pair track Basilisk down to a nearby construction site where he is attempting to dig up the Omega Stone.
While Spider-Man runs interference, Captain Marvel recovers the Omega Stone.
However, the stone reacts with Mar-Vell, growing in size. It encases the Kree warrior and suddenly teleports away.

Distracted by the sudden disappearance, Spider-Man is unable to stop Basilisk from getting away.
Spider-Man realizes that Mar-Vell's disappearance wasn't planned and wonders what he can do to help.

Yes, I believe the comicbook character Rick Jones is still dead.
It wasn't a nice thing to do but given how the people who publish the comics behave towards their long-term customer base and who are fans of certain marvel characters which include certain white male marvel characters for years/decades, I am not surprised in the least.

    Marvel Team-Up #17 Jan 1974
    "Chaos at the Earth's Core!"
After Captain Marvel had disappeared with the Omega Stone, Spider-Man heads
to the Baxter Building in order to enlist the aid of Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four.
Slipping into the Baxter Building, Spider-Man sets off the alarms and is snared in a coil device.
This alerts Mister Fantastic to his presence and as soon as he realizes that he is dealing with Spider-Man,
he deactivates the security system. Demanding to know why the wall-crawler is intruding.
Thinking that Spider-Man has come looking for the Human Torch,
Reed Richards tells him that the Fantastic Four has disbanded and he is the only one left.
When the web-slinger explains that he has come for Richards, he explains his encounter with Basilisk, the Alpha and Omega Stones,

as well as the disappearance of Captain Marvel.
After hearing this, Mister Fantastic tells Spider-Man that he can't help.
However, Spider-Man won't take no for an answer and tells Richards to stop kicking himself while he is down, convincing Reed to change his mind.
Using a device that he constructed to track Kree energy signatures,
Reed is able to track the Omega Stone, pinpointing the location as the center of the Earth.
Getting into the Fantasti-Car, Reed pilots himself and Spider-Man to the tunnel that leads to the Mole Man's domain of Subeterranea.
No sooner are they there are they swarmed by a legion of Moloids.
Although the pair held their own against the diminutive attackers, they are ultimately felled by a blast of knock out gas.
They are then carried to the Mole Man's throne room where they are revived.
The Mole Man decides to show them his latest weapon, a massive laser cannon
that is powered by both the Omega Stone and the magma found in Earth's core.
The Mole Man explains that he will use the laser to punch holes to the surface, causing untold destruction.

As an added bonus, the first shot -- when focused through the crystal -- will also incinerate Captain Marvel as well.

With his plan laid out before his foes, the Mole Man orders his Moloids to toss Mister Fantastic and Spider-Man into the magma pit below.
Despite this effort, the pair manages to avoid death using their respective powers to get out of the pit.
The Mole Man then orders his minions to get them, but before this can happen, Basilisk arrives and uses his powers to turn to the Moloids into ice.
Basilisk explains that he followed Spider-Man after their battle as he knew the wall-crawler would lead him to the Omega Stone.
This leads to a clash between the Mole Man and Basilisk over the Omega Stone.
While they are distracted, Mister Fantastic and Spider-Man attempt to free Captain Marvel from his prison.
When the two villains see this they put aside their difference momentarily to stop them.
With the heroes down, Basilisk turns on the Mole Man, knocking him out with an eye blast.
Basilisk then attempts to get at the Omega Crystal and claim it for his own.
However, by this point, Captain Marvel has managed to draw his armbands close enough to trigger a switch with Rick Jones.
With Jones back on Earth, the Omega Stone is restored to normal.

Thanks to tampering by Reed Richards, the laser cannon begins to destabilize.
As the three heroes attempt to leave, Basilisk seemingly perishes in a wave of magma while trying to recover the Omega Stone.
The Mole Man is also trapped and begs for help, but the exploding laser cannon prevents the heroes from saving him as well.
The trio then flee to the surface in the Fantasti-Car.

There, Rick Jones thanks Spider-Man and Mister Fantastic for their help before swapping places with Captain Marvel, who flies away.

Script by Len Wein. Pencils by Gil Kane. Inks by Mike Esposito, Frank Giacoia and Sal Trapani.

    Daredevil #107 Jan 1974
    "Blind Man's Bluff!"
Kerwin Broderick merges with his last creation - Terrex - and demands
that everyone surrender to him or he will kill every inhabitant of San Francisco.
When Daredevil attempts to attack Terrex directly, he finds his legs temporarily numbed as a warning to avoid such foolish attacks again.
Moondragon, Black Widow, Daredevil and Paul Carson then pull back to determine what to do next.

Elsewhere in the city, Broderick's law partner Jason Sloan watches the events unfold on television.
Realizing that Matt Murdock was right all along, he storms out of the office vowing to do something about his former boss.
Daredevil and the others meanwhile have given up and gone to Police Chief O'Hara to convince him to surrender to Terrex.
O'Hara refuses and storms out of the office, and the group finds the telegram on his desk informing him of his brothers death in Africa.
Police Chief O'Hara's brother was the father of Shanna O'Hara aka Shanna The She-Devil!
Just then another police officer enters the room and tells them that Terrex is being attacked by Captain Marvel.

Outside, Captain Marvel tries his best to stop Terrex however he is then attacked by Ramrod.
The two super-humans fight it out, however Captain Marvel finds that his strength is outmatched by Terrex
and so he changes into Rick Jones suddenly, blinding Ramrod enough for Jones to step out of his path,
and Ramrod runs straight into a brick wall knocking himself out.
Despite Captain Marvel's pleas to change back, Rick insists that they need to rest after
their last few cases and points out that Daredevil and the others are arriving via helicopter.

Elsewhere in the city, Angar the Screamer finally notices that Terrex killed his girlfriend Janice.
When he attempts to hug her corpse it crumbles into dust in his hands,
prompting the furious Angar to go out and get revenge against Terrex for killing his lover.

Back on the battlefront, Daredevil, Moondragon, and Black Widow are looking for Captain Marvel.
Realizing that his alter ego is needed, Rick Jones clashing his Nega-Bands together to switch places with Captain Marvel once more.
The Kree hero confronts the assemblage of heroes and offers his aid.

When Mar-Vel confirms Moondragon's origins, he explains that Terrex was a doomsday weapon in development by the people of Titan.

Because the creature is the embodiment of life, they would have to destroy it with something made of un-life or anti-matter.
However they would have to stop Terrex's rampage by attacking the mind of Broderick first.

Terrex is stopped first by Jason Sloan who attempts to shoot Terrex who just laughs at him.
With a choice between living and dying, Sloan chooses death than living under Terrex's rule.
Just then Matt Murdock shows up to confront Terrex as well.
Furious, Terrex orders Angar to use his powers against his foes, however Angar instead turns them against Terrex as well.

As Murdock, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel keep Terrex occupied,
Moondragon uses her mental powers to boost Angar's powers beyond their range.
They trap Terrex in a black void with the egg of creation, when Terrex smashes it he is enveloped in utter darkness.
The unlife destroys Terrex and kills Broderick and with the threat over Moondragon ends the illusion.
With all said and done, the heroes reel at the scope of what they accomplished and Captain Marvel parts company with them.

    Incredible Hulk #351 Jan 1989
    "Total Recall"
    Continued from Avengers Annual #17..

Having returned to Las Vegas following his involvement in the Evolutionary War, the Hulk finds that rays of the sun almost unbearable to handle.
Thinking this will cause Banner to finally come back, the Hulk refuses to surrender to this
and begins leaping his way back to his apartment, an ability hampered by the very sun that is sapping his strength.
Meanwhile, Marlo Chandler is rummaging in the kitchen when her roommate Mona and her friend Suzi Berengetti arrive home from shopping.

Suzi has brought Marlo a stuffed animal for her collection as a present.
They ask how Marlo is doing since she was injured and if Joe Fixit has come by recently.
However, they discover that he hasn't, which isn't received well by Mona who has started taking a disliking to Marlo's new boyfriend.

Suzi, wife of mobster Michael Berengetti and Joe's employer, tells them that Joe has been away for a while and nobody knows where he went.
Marlo suspects that there is much more to Joe Fixit than he is letting on.

By this time, the Hulk has made it back to his apartment inside the Colosseum Casino. Taking his private elevator, he feels even weaker than ever.
After a hot shower, the Hulk then retired to bed.
His final thoughts being how he managed to survive the Leader's bomb blast and set himself up in a life that is perfect.
He soon drifts off to sleep and begins to dream of the moments just after the Leader triggered the Gamma Bomb in Middletown...

... After the bomb blast, the Hulk finds him in a massive lush forest and at first, believes that he died.
However, he soon hears the screams of a woman and follows its sound.
It leads him to a massive Wartho, a telling sign that he is back on Jarella's world of K'ai.
The Hulk kills the Wartho by snapping its neck. At first, he thinks the woman he saved is Jarella,
however upon closer inspection he realizes that it's just a woman who dyed her hair to resemble his deceased lover.
Before he can get answers another Wartho attacks. This time, the Hulk allows himself to get swallowed and rips his way out of the Wartho's stomach.
Demanding answers, the Hulk is disturbed by the fact that the woman worships him as a god and even wears religious symbols depicting his image.
They are soon joined by three men named Gorsham, Whully, and Booly.
They explain that they have summoned the Hulk here because thousands have already died in his name
and that they don't want to see any more bloodshed. Meanwhile, Sister Marclark, the woman the Hulk had saved, flees back to a nearby village.
She claims that she saw the Hulk but such claims are considered blasphemy and she is taken to see the Grand Inquisitor Risuli.

Meanwhile, the Hulk is taken to Gorsham's home where he is told that since he revived their dying world the Hulk became revered as a god.
Unfortunately, this led to religious wars and a cast system where people are oppressed by the Grand Inquisitor Risuli.
Seeking to eliminate Risuli's rule, Gorsham and his followers used the technology found in Psyklop's
old citadel to locate the Hulk and used the technology and their magics to bring the Hulk there.
In order to prevent the transfer from destabilizing Earth's sun, they swapped the Hulk with a statue which contained the same amount of mass.
The Hulk initially refuses, but Gorsham offers to cast a spell that can permanently rid the Hulk of his alter-ego, Bruce Banner.
The Hulk accepts this deal, little knowing that Gorsham and his followers aren't telling him everything.

While at the castle of Grand Inquisitor Risuli, Sister Marclark is being tortured for her blasphemy. She insists that she saw the real Hulk.
Seeing that his rule is being threatened, Risuli tells his followers that Marclark is lying and what she saw wasn't the Hulk, but the Anti-Hulk.

As severe as the comicbook character Marlo Chandler's head injury was, her future boyfriend and husband to be, the comicbook character Rick Jones, suffered even more when Rick got crippled by a Banner-less Hulk who made a deal to work for Apocalypse and become his Horseman "War".
This would eventually result in Rick starring in the Avengers Forever series.
