Maybe the best year of the decade in movies, IMO.

    In order of release:

    Footloose
    Repo Man
    This Is Spinal Tap
Children of the Corn (campy, but creepy)
    Splash
    Police Academy
    Romancing the Stone
    Sixteen Candles
    The Natural
    Ghostbusters
    The Karate Kid
    The Last Starfighter
    The Neverending Story
    Revenge of the Nerds
    The Brother From Another Planet
    Amadeus
    All of Me
    The Terminator
    A Nightmare On Elm Street
    Beverly Hills Cop
    A Passage To India
    Starman

And if I was going to choose a "guilty pleasure" movie from this year it would be Conan the Destroyer.

    The year of Big Brother?

I have mixed feelings of the year, mainly because of Temple of Doom and Dune. Both of these movies were ones I was so looking forward to and both were such huge disappointments. And then there was Star Trek III, which was just .... oh my. Supergirl. Greystoke. Overall I don't consider it to be a great year, but a year when the movies for the most part let me down.

That said, it was a pretty good year for unexpected surprises like Revenge of the Nerds, Ghostbusters, Nightmare on Elm Street, This is Spinal Tap, Splash, Beverly Hills Cop, Amadeus and Terminator. And, of course, Footloose. Hard to overstate how important this year was in launching legitimate careers for several folks.

Out of all those movies in OP's list, Revenge and the Nerds and Sixteen Candles fell out of favor for me as time has gone on. To me they've just aged very badly.

Conversely, my appreciation for Beverly Hills Cop, Amadeus, and Buckaroo Bonzai increase with repeated viewings.

2010 is underrated. Top Secret should've been bigger back then.

And finally, Ghostbusters, Terminator, and Naussica 4eva.

Yes, 1984 was a very good movie too. It was also Richard Burton's last movie.

After recently re-watching both Sixteen Candles and Vacation, it seems like John Hughes movies are better remembered than re-watched. Too bad, because I loved those movies when I was a teenager in the 80's.

That film deserves some sort of an "Extra Credit" award for that you would eventually get Arnold's DVD commentary.

The barbarian versus wizard scene in Conan the Destroyer always makes me happy.

I love the first one (especially after a Single Malt) but as a fan of REH I can't find redeeming qualities in Destroyer. Just inferior on every level.

I haven't seen that one in a long time, but I remember liking it when I saw it. I tend to like just about all of Hughes's movies, but when I re-watch them now I notice cringe-worthy things that I just laughed off in the 80's.
