I interpret that he regrets that he could not make the world a better place for the mutants. Which is true. He died thinking that the mutants were facing a plague that would annihilate them

We can say his death had several consequences that affected mutants and X-men during the mess with the inhuman mist. Soon he will meet with Emma and I wonder what will happen something warm between ex-lovers or an explosive encounter full of guilt and grudges?
