I think Thompson wanted to use Hellion, but an editor suggested she use QQ instead. You can kind of tell from the story because Quentin was basically used as the team telekinetic.

Another oddity, since he was introduced as just a telepath. And now, post-Morrison, he's not only got a completely different look and personality, but is also a telekinetic potential-Phoenix-host with psi weapons, like he's some wannabe Rachel Grey / Psylocke.

You know he got his signature look with the slogan shirts and pink hair during Morrison's run, right? He got a makeover when he found out he was adopted. The arc ended with him dead, but when he returned years later, he maintained the look.
