I'm surprised there was nothing earlier than that - either the debut of Elektra or Born Again. That being said, they weren't going to get Frank Miller back, which would have been the obvious choice.

Understandable. He's rather busy working with the Man of Steel.
Daredevil #269 Aug 1989
"Lone Stranger"
Under directions from Spiral, the Blob and Pyro, functioning as Freedom Force,
attempt to track down a pretty young mutant named Amanda who has not registered.
The lecherous Blob immediately declares her "his girl".
Daredevil gets wind of this and decides to find the mutant girl before Freedom Force can.
In an attempt to even the odds, he gets Blob drunk. Daredevil finds the girl.
Pyro is close behind and refers to Daredevil as, "the lucky red jumping bean".
Meanwhile Amanda is sitting off to the corner wondering why a stranger is risking his life to protect her.
The Blob is still in the bar, groping some random lady bartender and causing general distress.
The Blob and Pyro resume fighting over who gets Amanda. More chaos ensues.
Eventually, Daredevil saves the day, leaving a melancholy, lonely mutant girl behind.
Script by Ann Nocenti, pencils by John Romita, Jr., inks by Al Williamson
^^^ I'd love to read that whole issue. Cool stuff to see DD take on X-Men villains.
DAREDEVIL #10 2nd Print Variant by JORGE FORNES:
Interior page from the Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky Vol. 1 TPB:
Nocenti was an X-Men editor so she was far more willing to use those characters in her Daredevil run. Her first issue is a tie-in to the Mutant Massacre. Unfortunately, it's not particularly good. That issue, where Daredevil defeats Pyro and the Blob is really well-handled, though. There's also a later issue by either Karl Kesel or Joe Kelly where he fights Pyro again while he's suffering from the Legacy virus that works fairly well.

Dang hurricane shut stuff down for awhile but I was finally able to get by the shop and pick up my books. WOW! The latest issue is one of the best issues of Daredevil in some time. Zdarsky’s run overall has been quite strong but he absolutely knocked it out of the park with issue 10! Can’t wait for the next issue.

DC: The Flash (Jay & Wally), Starman- Jack Knight, Stargirl, & Shazam!.
MARVEL: Daredevil, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), & Doctor Strange.
Current Pulls: Not a thing!
Agreed. While Fornes did a nice job last issue, Checchetto just is on a whole other level. Its worth it just for the way he draws Elektra. Also, really like how he draws Matt.
Story wise, there was a lot of different plots going on and I get the sense that we are building to something big. Enjoyed Peter's appearance as well.
It was fantastic. I'll take Matt struggling and digging himself out of the hole that is his life over just about any other version.
Keep in mind that you have about as much chance of changing my mind as I do of changing yours.
Issue was great, it's gonna be interesting to see if spoilers:end of spoilers
he takes Elektra up on her offer and allow her to train him, maybe after all this he's gonna be "reborn" and do stuff a bit differently going forward?
I really love the way Spidey is written and drawn here. I am looking forward to the eventual meeting between him and Matt, with Spidey giving back his mask (he took if with him right?), in a "welcome back" kinda way. Once Matt has his life all sorted out again that is.
