This cover looks like a mash up of the episodes "Miri" and "Shore Leave"

It's unlikely... except for Len Wein, no one involved with the Gold Key comics had ever SEEN the show. They were working from publicity stills and synopses. That's how you got crazy **** like rockets firing out of the shuttle bay or Janice Rand's hair getting mistaken for a hat by the colorist. Not to mention the various supernatural menaces the Enterprise ran into. This was written by Gerry Boudreau, who was mostly a Warren horror guy. Lots of CREEPY and EERIE credits, a few seventies horror shorts for DC, that kind of thing. It's about a disease that kills anyone over the age of 13, which is a little bit of a "Miri" riff, but I think it's coincidence.

Thanks for the background info! Are you sure that is a coincidence though about the plot being eerily similar to "Miri"? Did the comics come out while the show was airing or later?
