Thanks for so much detailed information, Cap, especially that from Exiles, a title I scarcely know anything about (BTW, I ask you for advice: do you really think it's worth to have a reading?).

I too think that De Landro designed a pretty decent and simple Longshot, which it's a relief. I like Kirk better as a penciler, but his haircut for Longshot was awful --he looks as a clown.

I'm not a fan myself of the mullet, I only consent Adams and Silvestri to draw it. Therefore I don't like any of Longshot's looks on Exiles, but Calafiore's was specifically horrid for my tastes.

As I've said before, I would be happy if Longshot took one of these looks on: Immonen's (short spiky hair & beard) or Zulli's (long straight hair).

Exiles - it pretty much falls into two parts. Longshot joins during the Worlds Tour arc specifically to fight Proteus. The early issues very much treat him like a weapon being used by the Exiles which is an interesting take. Tony Bedard writes him well and as a threat to proteus (pelletier's art of how Longshots power interacts with Proteus was very nice) and he seems a good fit with the team. The Bedard stuff has some nice quieter moments too between Longshot and Blink.

When Claremont takes over (which was delayed for five issues of amusing but meaningless filler due to CC's health issues) Longshot mostly got relegated ot a background role as Claremont is doing another The Wonder Of Betsy Versus Old Excalibur and Captain Britain Characters story, before being unceremoniously written out in Die by The Sword, which, if you're a fan of Claremont's umpteenth love letter to Captain Britain, Roma, Merlin and all the stuff he's written again and again and again I'm sure is great, but only reminded me of how good the original was, and how I hate reading Claremont revisit it.

I'm not gonna bash Claremont too much (becaus ehe is still a Comics God), but Exiles descends into a succession of middling Fantastic Four mind control stories, and the established cast get written out for for a succession of Characters With A Boring Twist Who All Agree That Betsy Is Awesome. Longshot gets a better send-off than poor Spider Man 2099 or Power Princess at least, and there's a couple of nice moments with Dazzler.

In summary - have a read of World's Tour, and if you like it, maybe give the next couple of arcs a go - the all-Wolverine-team story is very very funny indeed.

Thank you very much for your kind and reasoned review!

I'm gonna try to find and read World's Tour arc. I think I'm gonna go by CC's run, all due respect to good old beloved X-patriarch, because I know what you mean...

Hope you enjoy! As a very "old-school" Marvel fan, I really enjoyed seeing the Exiles whizz around a lot of old continuities, but your mileage may vary depending how familiar you are with all the universes visited! Longshot gets a really strong debut though!

    Uncanny X-Men #240 Jan 1989
Inferno: Part 1 of 7 - "Strike the Match!"
Alex Summers and Madelyne Pryor have decided to spend the evening at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan.
They have a romantic evening and can't help but notice that the place is empty and that the weather in Manhattan has been unseasonably warm.
Their evening is interrupted by a group of paranormal investigators who have come to set
up equipment to monitor the Empire State Building, which they believe is growing in size.
Their disturbance upset the owner of the shop and the scientists are kicked out.
As they enter the elevator they are surprised when the walls come to life and attack them.
While Havok talks to the owner, Madelyne examines the Empire State Building through binoculars and sees it as it really is and is happy.
When Alex rejoins her the two decide to return home to their secret hideout in Australia.
As they enter the elevator, Alex finds one of the scientists pairs of glasses and wonders what happened.
Madelyne, noticing the scientists are now part of the demonic mural in the elevator, dismisses their abrupt departure
and the two are soon teleported back to Australia by Gateway.
When Alex tries to spend more time with Madelyne, she decides to have some alone time and is teleported away by Gateway.
Realizing she's upset, Alex thinks he can come up with a way to help her and rushes towards the X-Men's base.

Madelyne, having adopted her Goblin Queen persona has come to Bard College where she finds the grave of Jean Grey.
She is angry that her husband Scott Summers supposedly got over his love of Jean when they married and angrily destroys Jean's tomb stone.
Coincidentally, Jean's parents John and Elaine had come to the grave site and mistaking Madelyne for Jean,
they are easily overpowered and transformed into demons, something she finds incredibly funny.
When N'Astirh joins her, she demands that he bring her to her son otherwise face her wraith.
N'Astirh complies and the four beings are teleported away.

Back in Australia, Rogue has taken to wearing some of Dazzler's clothing and trying to teach Longshot how to roller skate.
When Dazzler jealously confronts her, she upsets Longshot when she suggests that he is her own private property,

not realizing that while she loves Longshot he only regards her as a friend.
Seen on the monitors by Alex, he comments to himself how Longshot should be careful with Dazzler's feelings.
Using the devices, Alex manages to track down the Marauders.
When he realizes that Wolverine and Storm have sneaked up on him,
he tells the two that he has tracked the Marauders to the Alley where they had originally slaughtered the Morlocks.

Meanwhile, N'Astirh has teleported the Goblin Queen to a complex below an orphanage in Nebraska
where she finds a device similar to the Creche she saw in Genosha.
Wondering what it is, she gets a vision that suggests that she was grown in there.
When she looks at the plaque she finds that the experiment inside was called "Madelyne".

While in the Alley below Manhattan, the Marauders are settling into their new headquarters
when Blockbuster runs into the X-Men down one of the darkened alleys.
He is knocked flat by Colossus, starting the X-Men's ambush on the group.

The X-Men are out for blood and attack savagely, taking the Marauders by surprise.
In the confusion of battle, Blockbuster is surprised when the wall behind him suddenly comes to life and swallows him whole.
The battle takes another turn when Polaris uses her powers so snare Colossus and she gets into a "tug" of war with Storm,
who pits her wind generating power against Polaris' magnetic abilities -- the loser would be pummeled to death by Colossus's body.
However Polaris turns the tables by causing Colossus to smash through the top of the tunnel allowing the Marauders to escape to the surface above.
When the X-Men follow after them both groups are shocked to see the entire city has undergone some transformation.

Back in Nebraska, the Goblin Queen is furious over the lack of answers that N'Astirh has provided
when they are both confronted by Mr. Sinister who tells Madelyne that he is her father.

Story by Chris Claremont. Art by Marc Silvestri and Dan Green.

So much to comment about this issue, it's certainly an inflection point for X-Men and particularly for Longshot.

For the moment, I'll just say that it's SO refreshing to see Longshot angry about something.

PS: Oh, and I think that it's quite debatable that Dazzler loved Longshot. That's an interesting subject, actually.

I'm not suggesting they're shallow or they cannot feel love for someone. I'm just saying that regarding this triangle there's no romantic love implied --at least that's how I comprehend it.

Just try this little experiment: read the full Massacre-Outback's run (the real hard canon, IMHO), then you will verify the word 'love' is never pronounced not even thought by Longshot nor Alison. That's my interpretation of their relationship: two of them joined the X-Men about the same time, they were the newbies, so they naturally went together --most exactly, Alison searched for Longshot's company (for he feels good in any way) and it was common to see them elbow to elbow from the beginning.

Additionally, physical attraction was inherent to Longshot from the beginning, too. As soon as he fell in the Danger Room, the joke about 'all the girls adoring the stranger' (nothing was said about the boys but, ey) immediatly poped up. Strictly speaking, it was Rogue (baby Rogue, at least) who first had a crush on Longshot, together with Shadowcat.

I consider Dazzler to be a sexually open person, so I think it's perfectly natural that she (someway off panel) asked very soon for a sexual relationship to someone who she liked, who she found appealing and, furthermore, someone who had developed a certain mutual understanding with. But, honestly, I never drew from the story the feeling that she was in love with Longshot. Romantically in love, butterflies in your stomach and all that. Even less regarding Longshot towards Dazzler, because (I believe) he doesn't comprehend love the same way that most of us. It would be more like this:

That's (humbly) my headcanon after studying deeply this character's idiosyncrasy for a long time.

This doesn't mean that Alison didn't feel nothing for him but lust, you can have a sexual and affective relationship with somebody without being in love. I believe that's the case. Actually, there are scenes in which Ali showed she cared about him, particularly this one:

I can't believe that the artist has drawn four fingers for Longshot. At this stage in the game... -_-
