Yeah, like I said, some artists definitely draw it as a paint job, but I really can't look at those images and see it as her hair when the coloring, lighting and position clearly shows it's something separate:

The first time she appeared in comics, there was no black thing in her hair at all:

It's so inconsistent that the only logical explanation is that she sometimes uses a headband and sometimes she dyes it for whatever reason. Or sometimes her inhuman nature just spontaneously changes the color of her hair, because why the hell not? Her sister has hair-related powers, so maybe it's in the Amaquelin genes.

Anyway, looking at old art, I do believe the original intent was for her to be wearing a band and other artists just got it wrong in the future.

I also heard that originally, it was a head band. Somewhere around late '90's or 2000, it became her hair wave pattern.

I’m going to say she left the bands on for so long that they left a dark mark on her hair.

    No-Prize is mine.

Oh, and I love the way she looks masked.

Never saw that rain shower scene with Pietro before!

Also, rare to see Crystal creating rain shower-- not sure I ever saw her do that before. Good usage of her power!

"Shall Man Survive?" Part 2 of 2. Guest-starring the Inhumans.
Maximus the Mad has conquered Attilan! And his next target is the entire planet!
With the Fantastic Four and the Inhumans as his captives, Black Bolt's crazy brother is on the brink of world domination thanks to his powerful hypno-gun!

But the Inhumans still have one card to play! Black Bolt's awesome voice! His booming voice could free the royal family from its prison!
Or destroy the whole city! Likewise in a nearby chamber, the FF work feverishly to escape from their confinement!
If both super-teams can break out, they'll have a chance to break up Maximus' mad plan of conquest!

NOTES: This issue is the second appearance of BABY Franklin Richards.
Although the Invisible Girl appears on the cover, she is not in Attilan for the battle.
Maximus returns in Incredible Hulk 119. The Inhumans appear next in Silver Surfer (1st series) 18 .
