    Default Black Superhero Appreciation 2019

    black heroes.jpg

    Art credit here

I think 2018 was a great year for Black heroes in the MCU/Marvel Universe all around.

We got a Miles Morales movie. Tessa Thompson did wonderfully as Valkyrie. Black Panther smashed records. Luke Cage had a pretty good season 2. Cloak was introduced to the mainstream with Cloak and Dagger. It was announced that Moon Girl is getting her own cartoon. Rhodey came back to life in the comics. We got a really cool new Iron Heart book, a Luke Cage Comixology Original (which I think more people should talk about because it was really good!). Rayshaun Lucas took the mantel of Patriot, and a Zazie Beetz did a great job as Domino in Deadpool 2.

Hopefully this can continue in 2019 because last year was super Black and I loved every second of it.

Can you update the poll to put my man Blue Marvel up in this piece? Definitely a character Marvel needs to elevate with more appearances.

Prodigy, Mettle and Blue Marvel are up there. One is dead, and the two others are in semi-limbo.
Shuri used to be one of my faves, but I don't know who she is anymore.
For stories and potential more thatn the characters itself, I like Dr Voodoo. Wish he got another solo, ongoing or mini.

"None of the Above" or "Other" should be a poll option.
"Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success.”

Seriously, he goes from having a solo and leading the Avengers to being in limbo that's a massive drop in status.

wow. No love for Luke so far. Hmm. I would have hoped the TV show would change that.

When I came back to comics, I was surprised at how many people actually liked Luke. Even raved about him. Even though he formed one of the most popular duos in Marvel history, I never got the impression that readers cared all that much for him back in the day. Maybe he just reached his peak and we're seeing the downward slope? These things tend to be cyclical.

Well, since Blue Marvel isn't listed, I'll vote for Monica. (That reminds me, I need to hang a sketch in her appreciation thread.) But Storm is close behind her.

Loving that Monica is getting props with the poll, I wish it would translate to love in the comics but hopefully 2019 marks a banner year for my #1 hero. Also really wish the same for Blue Marvel. Someone other than Ewing at Marvel has to be interested in Adam.
