Nocenti Combines Fear and Magic in DC Comics' "Klarion"

I like Nocenti so I'll give this a shot even though I know zippo about the character.

Sometimes her writing amuses me, same way as Neal Adams or Frank Miller after 1987. McCarthy is just plain good, so I'll try it.

Most likely, Klarion will be a "try-out" title, designed to end around the time of next year's event.
I expect that if does well, it will either continue or be relaunched.

I do hope it does well. This is the kind of book DC needs.

Green Arrow failed because Nocenti's ambition didn't match previous expectations.

Green Arrow was energetic, creative and packed with an almost impossible amount of content. It was ultimately too weird for the buying public, it didn't fit well with the character and his history and his place in the DCnU, and editorial wranglings to make it a little more comprehensible were obvious. But those first few issues were strong in writing, if extremely difficult to decipher in art.

And the people who enjoy it will be happy to read those 8 issues, rather than the 0 they'd have otherwise. What does it matter to you if a book you aren't interested in exists?

I have no problem with Ann Nocenti.

That being said, this looks really weird and a helluva lot of fun. My kind of thing.

as wary as I am of Nocenti, she seems to have done a fair bit of research etc. from what I gathered in the interview, and the ideas seem fun. Perhaps with the ability to play with a lesser known character she might be able to have a good run on this due to less constraints editorially, etc.?

It sounds like you're not really approaching them with an open mind. They publish dozens of comics that are all very different from each other. Surely you can find some you like.

Thank you for saying this but the rest of DC's fandom ( what's left of it ) can't see beyond the Bat Books these days and they love to savage Nocenti as well.

Unfortunately neither DC or Marvel are in the business to create boutique comics for the dwindling few. That course leads to bankruptcy.
