Not gonna try to repost everything about posters, just picking the last one I see at random to provide some thoughts.

Actor prominence in movie posters has nothing to do with the character's importance to the plot. It's all about contract negotiations with the actors. It's not a coincidence that Evans is front and center but RDJ is larger. Or that Hemsworth and Johanssen are the same size and balanced on opposite ends of the poster (upper right, lower left). It's all about prominence of the actor, and that is negotiated as part of doing the movie.

It's why in some movies, where you have co-stars of equal prominence, you'll see one name in the upper right, and the other in the lower left. It gives the impression that neither has top billing. And that's in the contract.

Granted, but marketing to specific audiences is still a consideration for the less official ones.

Captain Marvel topped the box office for the second Friday of its domestic run, earning $19 million and bringing its domestic cume up to $215m in just eight days. That's a 69% drop from its $61.9m opening day (including Thursday previews). Bawdy jokes aside, that's an exceptionally boring drop, neither a super-strong hold nor a catastrophic fall. It's exactly in line with most big-scale comic book movies and big-scale fantasy actioners these days, such as The Hunger Games (-71%), Rogue One (-65%), Logan (-70%), Venom (-69%), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (-70%) and Avengers: Infinity War (-70%). The likely $70m second weekend will be the second-biggest second-weekend in March, behind Beauty and the Beast's $90m second-weekend-gross in 2017 following a record $174m debut weekend.

Yes, the $150 million-budgeted MCU movie has already crossed $200m domestic and it has passed (or will pass today) the unadjusted-for-inflation totals of Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202m), Thor: The Dark World ($206m), Venom ($212m), Solo ($214m), Ant-Man and the Wasp ($215m), Justice League ($229m), Doctor Strange ($232m). Presuming an over/under $70m (-53%) second weekend, the Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson/Reggie the Cat action fantasy will have earned $267m in ten days of domestic release, putting it above the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man ($262m) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259m). At this point, it looks like Captain Marvel will top $400m domestic. Whether it finishes closer to Iron Man 3 ($409m) or Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459m) will be decided over the next couple of weeks.

This is already a big win for all invested parties whether or not it matches Captain America: Civil War in North America or worldwide ($409 million/$1.15 billion). The movie cost "just" $150m, so it's already making money, while Larson's crowd-pleasing star turn will only make Avengers: Endgame that much more of a big deal in six weeks. So, yes, Marvel can open a solo superhero movie with a new hero to numbers approximating the biggest of the sub-genre. That's a huge deal for the brand going forward as they plan to introduce a slew of new characters over the next few years.

The only other holdover releases that made much noise (or earned over $1 million) were How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and A Madea Family Funeral. The DreamWorks Animation threequel earned another $2.546m (-24%) on its fourth Friday for a likely $9.4m (-36%) weekend and $136m 24-day domestic cume. It looks like the $129m-budgeted toon should end its run with around $160m domestic, give or take the legs over the next few weeks. It should be over $450m worldwide as of now and should be close to $500m (if not over the hump) by tomorrow.Lionsgate's final Madea movie earned $2.17 million (-33%) in its third Friday for a likely $8m (-36%) weekend and terrific $59m 17-day cume. At this rate, the Tyler Perry flick could end its domestic run with as much as $75m-$80m on a $20m budget. That would make it Perry's biggest grosser behind only Madea Goes to Jail ($90m in 2009) and (if it makes it past $77m) his third biggest adjusted for inflation

- CM drop off is about normal

- People seem to forget this small unknown IP to much of public and it is doing pretty good. And Marvel if it is going to keep its cinematic universe going has to introduce new characters or start replacing actors, Right now they are going with new characters.

- Some how freaking Madea(horrible critical reviews and pretty bad fan ratings) is success which proves once you can target your audience you will be fine

Talking about the drop-off is the most easily discreditable thing so far. We all knew that would be their first port in the storm and most of us know it’s not a particularly safe port. We have ended up exactly where we were with Black Panther. A movie that is more successful than some people expected, leading up to a blockbuster movie they will feature in shortly. Admittedly Black Panther was more successful than anyone could have guessed because it was surprisingly excellent. This is ‘merely’ good, but for a key part of the audience really good.

It is almost stating the obvious now, but if you aim movies at different but large demographics and manage to reach that audience, while also maintaining a universal appeal within a broad and successful franchise, you will make money.

Captain Marvel” continues to dominate the box office in its second weekend, topping the charts with $69 million grossed domestically and $119.7 million grossed overseas.

While the domestic total was a 56 percent drop from the film’s $153.4 million — larger than the 43-44 percent drop for “Black Panther” and “Wonder Woman” — it still sits only behind 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” ($90 million) on the all-time list of second weekend totals in March. With $189 million grossed worldwide this weekend, including $12.5 million from IMAX screens, the film now has a global total of $760 million, surpassing the $623 million global run of “Ant-Man & The Wasp” in less than two weeks.

For anyone whose actually seen the film, its obvious in the first ten minutes that all of that stuff about SJW and feminism in the movie is complete nonsense.
