I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

How about Sylvester & Tweety? Lassie? Dino from The Flintstones? And from an older age, Little Orphan Annie's dog Sandy?

    Arf!

As for pet, peak-wise, I don't think anybody tops Rin Tin Tin (yes, that includes even Lassie). An immensely popular draw at the box office back in The Roaring Twenties, he's the only animal to have received the most votes for a Best Male Actor Academy Award (as The Old Perfesser Casey Stengel would have said, you can look it up!)

I wonder if Rin Tin Tin has any offspring named Rin-Aluminium-Aluminium?

My teenage niece would have enjoyed that, Major.

Would the Black Stallion count as a "pet"? I read most of the books as a little girl. He was almost like a mysterious guardian of little Alex in the movie, which was beautifully filmed by director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel

I'm holding out for a twist on the pet/owner relationship shown in one particular cartoon. I'll let you know what I'm talking about after voting.

If we are considering markets outside North America, Tintin's dog Snowy would have to get consideration. Tintin's sales dwarf most US comics sales, he's been around longer than comic books have in the US, and is still a top seller across Europe and other markets. Tintin (with Snowy) also was featured in widely circulated American kids magazines like Children's Digest that reached American audiences that comics did not. To most American comic fans, he might be a bit obscure, but to readers across the world, he was fairly ubiquitous.

Comic fans get the comics their buying habits deserve.

Since future Nazi sympathizer Emil Jannings was given the award instead, maybe it would have been less embarrassing to have given the Oscar to Rinny after all.

How about we let people come up with their ideas instead of throwing out dozens of suggestions?

Snowy? That's a cute name but it's not close to the excellent original "Milou".

One entry, a little bit off topic since it's more an utlilitary dragon than a pet... Anyway :
