I still don’t get why they went that route with her name to begin with in merchandise. Spider-Woman isn’t exactly a household name so it’s not like there’d be confusion with Jessica Drew. And on top of that, it’s such a stupid nickname in universe that sounds more like they’re mocking her. It’s like calling Peter Spider-Pete or Tony Stark Iron Tony. It’s not remotely cleaver and was just a silly fan nickname to instantly differentiate her from Jessica. Kinda like how I don’t expect anyone in universe or in merchandising to call Otto SpOck nor should they.
Iirc Jessica had a comic when Gwen's first came out. That and let's face it: pure nostalgia factor. Despite basically being a new character Marvel was banking on the Gwen Stacy name being recognizable, which is helped by the Spectacular cartoon and Amazing Spider-Man movies. Putting Gwen right there on the title got them some instant nostalgia and/or Emma Stone fans.
The fanarts and covers also tie into his. Notice that Gwen appears with much longer hair ala her 616 counterpart and some fans who hadn't read the comics also assume she's just 616 Gwen with spider powers. There were even people who knew of her who were confused at the spiderverse version for having a punk rock background despite the fact that the first time we see her in the comics she was mashing out on the drums.
Really, Spider-Gwen as a title is never going away. They can call her whatever they want in-universe but the name's been ingrained for older fans of the comics. Newer versions like the one from Marvel Rising use Ghost Spider since presumably they're marketing to a fresh audience.
Yeah, Spider-Woman's series written by Dennis Hopeless started as a Spider-Verse tie-in, and Gwen started in Edge of Spider-Verse #2, which had Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman as the title on the cover. When they decided to make GSSW an ongoing series, they renamed it Spider-Gwen because of Jessica's book existing.

While I remain a fan of the character and even more so the concept, I can't say I like this new series. Thus far it has been extremely weak IMO.
"So you've come to the end now alive but dead inside."
Given the factor of finding Gwen Stacy's name more marketable, then why not name the book Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman? It's not like it would be confused for Jessica Drew's book especially when around the same time Marvel was running things like Amazing Spider-Man at the same time as Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man and even now we have Amazing Spider-Man, Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man all running at the same time and no one confuses them. Marvel really has no actual excuse for having named the book Spider-Gwen or Ghost Spider other than to perpetuate a name for the character that no one was asking for and juts hasn't proven popular.
Actually, people were already calling her Spider-Gwen before she even got a comic book of her own. Spider-Gwen is, for a lot of people, catchy and tells you who the character is - Gwen Stacy as Spider-Woman. No need for anything big when the nickname works. Ghost Spider is really just them trying to give her a 'cool' official name even if her title will keep being called Spider-agwen. Same way Laura Kinney's book is always titled X-23 even though her in-universe name is Talon, which NO ONE ever refers to her as.
I'm pretty sure there have been comics in recent years where when in an X-Men group she has 'Talon' next to her name. Of course during missions everyone just calls her Laura anyway so there's no point.
Still, let's see if they can keep this. At this point I'm no longer worried about Gwen being cancelled: between the comics, animated shows, video games (including the upcoming MUA 3) and appearing as the third protagonist in an Oscar winning film, Gwen's staying. Only worry is that she'll be jumped to 616.
That's the thing, it's a fan nickname, nothing to be taken seriously. People call Superior Spider-Man SpOck as a nickname but I don't see Marvel naming the book SpOck or even having anyone in-universe call him that. A fan nickname may work as a means for the fans to identify the character, but they should never be used in the book because at that point, it just sounds silly. And as for Talon, nobody has ever used that name for Laura and if they did, it never stuck because even in-universe, her code name is X-23.
Laura's code name from her abusive handlers is X-23. She never called herself that after she got to the X-Men and yet most fans still call her as such, ignoring the context of the name and how much she hates it. As for Gwen, it's cause she got way more hype than Otto ever did. Gwen got cosplays and fans from her first costume concept art; that's pretty big. Everyone started calling her Spider-Gwen so the Latour and Marvel followed suit. Also, as mentioned before, Spider-Gwen is just far shorter and catchier Spider-Woman: Gwen Stacy. That and it makes searches and labeling easier. Search up Spider-Woman and chances are you get Jessica Drew. Search up Spider-Gwen and you get Spider-Gwen. Easier to label and differentiate.
Have you simply not read anything that Laura has appeared in including her current ongoing because everyone calls her X-23. That is fact and has been for most of her publication aside from when she became Wolverine. And also what you’re stating with Spider-Gwen is literally nothing but pure laziness. Miles Morales is Spider-Man as well as Peter Parker and currently exist in the same universe as him, both Sam and Richard Rider are Nova, there are countless Green Lanterns and yet in none of these cases do they end up resorting to a fan nickname to tell them apart. You treat it as though people who are fans of the character are that easily confused especially when people can easily tell these characters apart simply by using their actual name. The Spider-Gwen name, aside from being a fan nickname for her, is wholly unnecessary and forced just as the change of her name to Ghost Spider, a name that already belongs to another spider character.
Why do people keep bringing up the other Ghost Spider? He was literally from a oneshot and never showed up again. Hell, by that logic calling Gwen as Spider-Gwen is the only option too since Jess is currently Spider-Woman and has more presence than a oneshot. As for Spider-Gwen's name, agree to disagree. It's short, it's catchy and it sells; that's all it really needs to be. If nothing lse Spider-Gwen stands out more compared to Spider-Woman.
