Me too. It also helps that there are creative people at Marvel who care enough to give him a chance and make him an interesting character.

    Avengers Forever #7 Jun 1999
"Into a Limbo Large and Broad..."
Gathering in the hangar bay of Kang The Conqueror's replica Sphinx, the Avengers ready
themselves for a surprise assault on Immortus's fortress in the otherdimensional realm of Limbo.
Engineering more easily-portable modules from one of the larger time-travelling Chronospheres, Giant-Man fashions equipment allowing them
to make the journey while Songbird creates a solid-sound stealth glider as the team's "vehicle". Left behind again is Rick Jones,
who must remain outside of Immortus's reach for still-unrevealed reasons. As the Avengers depart, Captain Marvel
admonishes their young cohort quitesternly, if not cryptically, that no matter what, Rick is to stay in the Sphinx!

Exiting the command ship and breaking through the dimensional barrier, the Avengers witness an array of images similar to the last set.
However, these are more personal to the team, containing seemingly-contradictory declarations
from Dr. Pym himself over the years regarding their erstwhile android teammate, the Vision.
Hawkeye is momentarily taken aback as they witness a curious adventure from his future wherein the team
is led through the origin of then-associate Mantis by a talking stick Immortus refers to as a "synchro-staff".
Finally, the most vexing tableau appears as an escapade from the team's earliest days that no one remembers-
including the three members of their party whom are also present in the "missing reel" apparition!

Emerging in Limbo, the Avengers attempt an approach on Immortus's fortress, however given the impermeable nature
of the dimension, its appearance is ever-changing. Finally landing on an outcropping, the heroes disembark with Yellowjacket
utilizing his chronal anomaly detector from the Old West excursion, while Captain Marvel recalibrates his Cosmic Awareness.
No sooner getting their bearings, the corridor suddenly inverts in a disorienting "M.C. Esher-esque" fashion,

spilling the Avengers off into multiply-improbable directions.

Each lands in some manner of death-trap/dungeon/obstacle-maze. Hawkeye regains his footing in a darkened cavern.
Igniting a flare arrow, he discovers he's surrounded by gigantic statues of himself from various points in time with some in ruins.
Before given an opportunity to speculate the significance, Immortus's colossal brute henchman, Tempus, springs forth and attacks.

Captain America appears in what looks like the bowels of a classic European-style castle.
Attempting a locked door, Cap's attention is caught by the voice of his old friend, Nick Fury.
As Fury tells Cap it's pointless to struggle, the Sentinel of Liberty counters with disbelief as to how the career master spy could possibly be there.
Elsewhere in the fortress, Giant-Man and the Wasp battle severe winds and mysterious false echoes of conversations past to find one another.

As his older, more gun-shy self and the woman they love endure their hardship,
Dr. Pym's younger, amnesiac and mentally-unstable Yellowjacket persona has a startling realization.
Instead of a physical and mental trial, he is cast into a control room full of monitors not unlike the one aboard the Sphinx.
The screens depict several scenes from his future that unequivocally drive home what the others have been telling him all along:
Yellowjacket didn't murder and replace Hank Pym. Yellowjacket is Hank Pym!
Finally arriving at this self-evident conclusion, Yellowjacket decides to do something about it all the same...

Songbird stands trial by ghostly apparitions of all the people in her life she's ever felt guilty about.
As she begins to succumb to despair from her imagined torments, Captain Marvel comes upon her and urges her to fight.
Helping her to focus on reality, Marvel impulsively kisses Songbird.
Potentially overstepping himself, he then reveals that in his future the two of them are a romantic couple.

In Immortus's throne room, Yellowjacket pounces on the time-lord from the rafters.
Freezing Yellowjacket in midair, Immortus then seals him pleading in a stasis tube.

Back at the Sphinx, Rick is growing impatient and unable to monitor the Avengers due to foggy interference.
Taking Marvel's dogmatic cautioning as a rebellious dare, Rick makes for one of the remaining Chronospheres...

In Limbo, as Tempus battles Hawkeye, the giant blasts the Archer with eyebeams meant to devolve an opponent.
Although briefly exposing Barton, Tempus is undone, discovering that in his
most recent past, Hawkeye possessed the size-changing abilities of Goliath.
Evening-up the fight tremendously, Barton destroys Tempus with his own giant warclub.

Cap continues his discourse with the complacently chameleonic Fury until he finally has enough.
Disputing whether their various deeds over the years has truly meant anything,
Cap finally storms off and rams down the immense door with his shield.
Down a corridor not far away, Libra looks on in approval that Cap's successful struggle has righted "the balance"...

The Wasp and Giant-Man manage to find one another, countless hordes of Immortus's "Army of the Ages" on their heels.
Realizing their assault's a bust, the Wasp signals the others to rendezvous for extraction.
The team eventually meets up and battles their way back to the portal but discover that Yellowjacket is MIA.

Once back at the Sphinx, they realize that Rick is no longer onboard. However, all is not lost as Hawkeye reveals that while shrinking
down and finding his belongings amongst the wreckage of his fight with Tempus, he also found the all-knowledgeable... Synchro-Staff!

Back in Limbo, Yellowjacket cuts a deal: he'll help bring in the Avengers providing
Immortus fixes things so Yellowjacket remains exactly how is now AND gets "the girl"...

    Avengers #6 Jul 1964
"The Mighty Avengers Meet The Masters Of Evil!"
En route to respond to the Teen Brigade's distress call, Captain America gives the other Avengers a demonstration of
skill with his shield. Cap thanks Iron Man for upgrading his shield with transistors, making the shield even easier to use.

He thinks of Bucky and begins to dwell on the past.

Prior to the Teen Brigade's distress signal, over the jungles of South America, a pilot flies a plane along
a perilous route to bring supplies to his master, Baron Zemo. Zemo examines the latest scientific journals,
looking for a formula to dissolve the mysterious "Adhesive X," which has permanently bonded his hood to his face.
He angrily discovers in a newspaper that Captain America is alive, and explains to the pilot that Captain America
caused his hood to be glued to his face. The pilot leaves Zemo, with instructions to find three people...

In present day New York, the Teen Brigade are still waiting for the Avengers to arrive.
One of the Teen Brigade members, Tom, explains that the situation has escalated
and that the Black Knight is flying over the city, spraying a mysterious chemical onto the streets below.
After a brief time, the city is brought to a standstill, with people and vehicles alike stuck on the spot.
The Melter appears, bragging about how Zemo has upgraded his melting ray so that it affects all metals, instead of only iron.
Radioactive Man joins him, and they continue to spray adhesive and stamp out any resistance from the police.
Suddenly, the Avengers appear and battle the villains.
Unaware of the trap, Captain America and Giant-Man are stuck to the ground by the Adhesive X.
As the Wasp and Thor hold off the villains, Iron Man cuts through the ground beneath
the trapped heroes and drags the pavement away with a tow truck, heroes still attached.
The Black Knight appears and charges the truck. Thor leaps ahead and knocks the Black Knight off-balance.
As the Avengers escape, Zemo arrives and is updated by the other villains.
He realizes that if anyone can find a solution to Adhesive X, it is the Avengers, so he decides to wait until they have found one.

Back in the Avengers HQ, the heroes try in vain to remove the adhesive.
The Wasp remembers that the villain Paste-Pot Pete is an authority on pastes and adhesives.
He helps the Avengers, in an effort to reduce his prison sentence.
Iron Man retrieves the "super-dissolver" and frees Cap and Giant-Man.
They realize that each of the villains had been gathered because they had an advantage against certain members of the team,
and decide to switch enemies to confuse them and gain the upper hand. Cap contacts the Teen Brigade, as they are also vital to the plan.

Elsewhere, Zemo and his newly-formed Masters of Evil prepare for their next attack on the city.
The pilot is left alone to refill Adhesive X canisters, but is ambushed by the Teen Brigade, who replace the adhesive with the super-dissolver.

Unknowingly, the Masters of Evil take the dissolver and spray it over the city, freeing all the previously-trapped citizens.
Thor leaps into action, and targets the Black Knight. After a brief duel in the air, Thor captures him.

Down on the street, Giant-Man approaches Radioactive Man.
With Iron Man's help he outwits the villain and encases him in lead to nullify his radioactive powers.
Iron Man is suddenly attacked by the Melter but manages to escape.
Tricked into melting a fire hydrant, he is captured when the water short-circuits his melting device.

Back at the Masters of Evil's base, Zemo discovers the Teen Brigade and hypnotizes them with his Hypno-Ray.

Before he can instruct them, Zemo is attacked by Captain America.
They are equally matched, until the pilot recovers and shoots Cap from behind, grazing his temple.
Before they escape, the pilot decides to finish Cap off.
He is thwarted however, when the Wasp secretly pushes a nail into the barrel of his pistol, causing the bullet to miss its target.
Giant-Man pursues the fleeing pilot and captures him, while Zemo escapes.
The Avengers are annoyed that they didn't capture Zemo, but Cap confidently informs the team that the
canister that Zemo stole wasn't the dissolver but is in fact tear gas, swapped earlier by the Teen Brigade.
They see Zemo's heli-ship crash in the distance, and leave the police to pick him up.

Upcoming issues hint that Rick, despite his emaciated state, is alive but not in the best shape (Kind of like Banshee in X-men these past few months). As for the new Abomination, it's possible it'll return but with a new host.

    Incredible Hulk #357 Jul 1989
    "Possibilities"
Having signed a contract with Nick Cloot of the Maggia, Glorian discusses his plans to make the Hulk see the light over a game of pool.
Cloot is impressed with the plan, but Glorian is through talking and tells Cloot
to find an opponent that is a sufficient challenge for the Hulk, as part of the plan.
With Glorian gone, Nick Cloot drops all pretenses that he is trying to help the dream-maker help.
Activating a secret panel, a wall opens up revealing a pentagram on the floor.
Cloot then uses it take him down somewhere very, very, deep.

Meanwhile, the Hulk has retreated into his own mind and tears down the mental brick wall he built around Bruce Banner,
suspecting that his alter-ego has been somehow involved with his current problems.
When the Hulk threatens to kill Banner, Bruce doesn't even flinch. He explains that he is tired of running from the Hulk,
but calls his bluff, pointing out that the Hulk might end also kill the Hulk's ability to reason.
Furious and frustrated the Hulk decides to chance it and punches out Banner.
However, it is Bruce who wakes up on the floor of the Hulk's apartment. He suddenly hears a knock at the door.
It turns out to be Marlo Chandler who demands to see both Bruce and Joe Fixit together.

Bruce tells her that he is not feeling himself and that Joe is not around. Fed up of the mystery behind the two men in her life,
Marlo leaves, telling Bruce that she doesn't want to see either of them again. After Marlo has left, Bruce sneaks out of
the Coliseum Casino to get some food and get some new clothes so he can return those that he took earlier.
Thinking how easily he rationalized stealing the clothes he is wearing, Bruce hopes this isn't going to become a habit.

At that moment, Nick Cloot arrives in the deepest pits of Hell where he searches for the ideal opponent to pit against the Hulk.
In a pool of lava he finds the tortured body of Denis "The Menace" Malloy, one of the most notorious hitmen in the United States before his death.
Re-Christening him the Ghoul, Cloot offers Malloy a chance to leave. He tells the Ghoul that his only way out is
up the flight of stairs behind him, but warns that there is a terrible monster that will stop him every step of the way.
Willing to risk it, the man formally known as Denis Malloy makes a break for it, sprinting up the stairs.

Meanwhile, Glorian pays a visit to Joe Fixit's employer, mobster Michael Berengetti, who is annoyed at the interruption.
Glorian explains that he has come to warn him of the possibility that Fixit might go on a rampage through Las Vegas.
Berengetti doesn't buy it until suddenly it appears that the Fixit comes tearing through his office, furious about the temperature of his bath water.
Berengetti cowers under his desk, but the rampage suddenly stops.
When he looks up from his desk there is no sign of Glorian, Fixit or any of the damage caused by the rampage.
Michael dismisses this as a bad dream, but it has shaken his confidence that he can keep Fixit under control.

Meanwhile, with some of the Hulk's money, Bruce Banner goes to a men's clothing store to buy a new outfit.
He passes up the opportunity to buy durable purple clothing, opting for something more expensive and less tacky outfit.
He then goes looking to a ride to take him out to a nuclear research facility out in Yucca Flats.

Back down in Hell, the Ghoul is still climbing the stairs.
As he wonders how high they go he is suddenly attacked by what appears to be the Hulk.
The Ghoul is then attacked, the fake Hulk crushes his hands, turning them into misshapen talons.

While at a gym, Marlo Chandler is playing tennis with one of her clients when she is approached by Glorian.

He warns her to stay away from Joe Fixit and when she concurs with his suggestion
it appears that the Hulk has come tearing through the wall and threatens to hurt her.
This too is an illusion that convinces Marlo to question her relationship with Joe Fixit.

While at the nuclear research plant, Bruce using his "Bancroft" alias and a fake mustache manages to convince the facility to hire him on as a janitor.

Back in Hell, the Ghoul continues his climb when he is attacked by the fake Hulk again.
This time, the apparition tears into his back, pulling skin off the bone. This skin turns into bat-like wings.
Furious over being horribly mutilated the man once known as Denis Malloy vows to kill the man he thinks is responsible.

That night, Bruce Banner returns to the Coliseum before his nightly transformation into the Hulk.
The Hulk then calls Michael Berengetti and asks to talk to him right away.
Michael abruptly cuts him off telling he can't talk that night and hangs up on him.
This leaves the Hulk wondering what's eating his boss.

While in Hell, the Ghoul is almost at the end of the stairs when he is attacked by the "Hulk" once more.
This time his attacker mutilates his foot and deforms his face.

The Hulk then tries to pay a visit to Marlo, who is frightened to see him and flees back up to her apartment.
He forces his way in and stops her roommate Mona from calling the cops.
When he confronts Marlo, she tells him her life is hers, not his and not "Bruce Bancroft's".

After a moment of silence between the two torn lovers, the Hulk turns around and leaves. Finally, at the Kudos Casino, the Ghoul emerges from
the flaming portal in the floor. When he arrives he screams out, demanding to know where the person, who horribly mutilated him, can be found.

    Avengers #7 Aug 1964
Rick Jones dons Bucky's costume in "Their Darkest Hour!"
Iron Man faces the Avengers, who suspend him for a week after he refused to assist them a few days ago.

In Asgard, the Enchantress and the Executioner are banished to Earth by Odin.
There they find Zemo, who had escaped the authorities, and they team up with him to stop Captain America.
The Enchantress's ultimate motive, however, is to get Thor by her side.

After a training session fighting professional wrestlers in a gym, Captain America scolds Rick Jones for trying on Bucky’s old uniform.

This brings back memories of Zemo and sparks again his will for revenge on his old enemy.
After Giant-Man and the Wasp depart to the jungle to do some research on ants, Cap gets a visit

from the Executioner posing as an ex-Nazi to lure the hero in the Amazon jungle to face Zemo.
Meanwhile, the Enchantress successfully captures Thor by hypnotizing him.
She uses a spell that somehow convinces Thor that his teammates are evil.

In South America, Cap easily gets rid of the natives fighting for Baron Zemo, but falls into a deep game trap.
Called by Thor back to New York, Giant-Man and the Wasp arrive by helicopter to get attacked by the God of Thunder.
Hearing of this on TV, Stark decides to intervene as Iron Man, despite his banishment from the Avengers.

The Enchantress is remotely watching Zemo’s progress in defeating Cap.
When she sees that the hero is still alive at the bottom of the pit, she tries to help by causing a cave-in,
but it only gives Cap the opportunity to escape his prison. He defeats Zemo's forces and the baron tries to escape.
Captain America stows away aboard the escape ship without Zemo’s suspicion.

Meanwhile, Iron Man brings Thor back to his senses. Zemo's ship arrives in New York and he attacks the Avengers.
When Cap makes his presence known to Zemo, the Enchantress takes the ship back to the Executioner, who subdues the hero.
The Masters of Evil flee before the rest of the team reaches them, but Thor generates a space warp that sends the ship who knows where.
The team decides to get ready, because they will be back.

Roster includes: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and Giant-Man.

    Captain America #116 Aug 1969
    "Far Worse Than Death!"
As the ultimate revenge, the Red Skull has used the Cosmic Cube to swap bodies.
Teleporting Sharon Carter to them, she seeks comfort from Cap's greatest
enemy, while Cap's warnings are dismissed as the ravings of a madman.
After convincing Sharon that the "Red Skull" is utterly mad, "Captain America" sees her to the door,
and tells her he's going to double back to make sure his foe is turned over to the law. However,
the Red Skull is, in reality, going to continue to use the Cosmic Cube to imperil the Star-Spangled Avenger.

Using the Cube, the Red Skull transports Captain America outside a government testing lab.
Spotted by security, Captain America is shot at, with no way of proving he is not the Red Skull, Cap flees for his life.
To further implicate Captain America, the Red Skull uses the Cosmic Cube to cause an explosion that the "Red Skull" gets blamed for.
When the guards capture the "Red Skull", cap fights free and flees the scene, stealing an automobile in order to get away.
The Red Skull, satisfied that Captain America will be utterly destroyed decides to see what it's like living in the boots of his oldest enemy.
Heading towards the police station, the Red Skull is disgusted by the shows of respect and adoration people show for him,
wondering why Captain America doesn't use his power to crush those who worship him into subservience.
Arriving at the police station, "Captain America" is told of the "Red Skull's" bombing of the research lab.
The Skull secretly uses the Cosmic Cube to tip the police off as to where Captain America is fleeing.

Sure enough, Cap finds himself in a high speed chase with the police and it is only with
his superior driving skills that he manage to escape the chase and all police roadblocks.
As the "Red Skull's" police chase hits the news the Avengers learn about it,

and Rick Jones decides to go and find "Captain America" to see if he can help as a side kick.
With the help of the Teen Brigade, Rick finds "Captain America" and offers to help him capture the "Skull".

Much to Rick's shock, "Cap" refuses his aid and tells the young man to get lost.
Rick complies, walking away thinking that all his insecurities about not measuring up to the original bucky were true.

Resuming his watch over his foe, the Red Skull is amused to see
Captain America making his way through the security at Avengers Mansion.
His presence does not go undetected and the Avengers soon face the "Red Skull" in battle.
Not believing the "Red Skull's" claims that he is really Captain America, the Avengers attempt to over power him.
Although Cap gives a good fight he is ultimately captured.
The Red Skull gets the ultimate jest when Sharon Carter comes to the Mansion looking for Captain America.
The Red Skull then uses the Cosmic Cube to take control of Sharon and sends her to kill Captain America.
When she can't bring herself to do it, and resists the Cosmic Cube's influence, the Red Skull comes up with an even better idea:
He has Captain America transported to Exile Island in the hopes that his minions in the Exiles will kill
Captain America thinking that they are finally getting revenge against the Skull for his previous treachery against them.

    Incredible Hulk #358 Aug 1989
    "Inferno - 2, Hulk - 0"
Led to believe the Hulk is responsible for his being transformed into a demon,
the man now known as the Ghoul flies over Las Vegas hunting for his prey.
Watching from the window of the Kudo Casino is Maggia leader Nick Cloot.
He is joined by Glorian, who reports that he has fostered distrust in the Hulk's closest allies in the hopes of forcing him to see Glorian's light.
When asking who Cloot has found to fight the Hulk, he is horrified at the sight of the Ghoul.
Glorian questions what he has gotten himself into, but Cloot assures him
that the Ghoul will do the job, as he can track the Hulk wherever he may be.

At that moment, the Hulk is checking out a cabaret show at the Ponyland Revue,
still fuming over how both Berengetti and Marlo have rejected him.

Suddenly, the Ghoul comes crashing through the roof and challenges the Hulk.
Not knowing who this creature is, the Hulk is still more than happy to oblige a fight.
The battle between the two takes them out into the street where a police SWAT team has already arrived on the scene.
When the officers shoot at the Ghoul, the Hulk is surprised to see that they have no effect on his foe.
The Hulk leaps into battle anyway, but is shocked when the Ghoul's claws not only cut him open,
but makes the wounds burn bad enough to harm him.
This weakens the Hulk enough for the Ghoul to pick up the Hulk and toss him into the Liberace Museum.
The two continue to fight, and the battle sends them crashing into a nearby waterpark.
The battle soon becomes breaking news, as reports fear this might be similar to the past demonic possession of New York City.

Watching the news in their apartment, Marlo tells her roommate Mona to change the channel to something that isn't about Joe Fixit.

As the battle rages on, the Hulk notices that the Ghoul weakens when splashed with water, and uses it to gain the upper hand in battle.
Observing this from the Kudo, Glorian has seen enough, and thinking that Nick Cloot
is really the Shaper of Worlds testing him, he tells Cloot to end the charade.
However, Glorian was wrong, Cloot is an entirely different beast altogether.
Growing in size and strength, Nick Cloot grabs Glorian by the arm and forces him
to his knees, and tells him that he is still held to the contract he signed earlier.
If Glorian fails to make the Hulk seen the light by midnight, Cloot has full claim on Glorian's soul.

Elsewhere in the city, the Hulk and the Ghoul's fight sends them crashing into the Coliseum Casino.
Although he is trashing his own place of employment, the Hulk refuses to give up fighting his foe.
Correctly deducing his foe's weakness, the Hulk then tricks the Ghoul into entering a meat locker.
Weakened by the cold, the Ghoul is totally at his mercy. When the demon tries to slip
back outside, the Hulk grabs his leg and impales the Ghoul on a meat hook, killing him.

With the battle over, Michael Berengetti approaches the Hulk and tells him that he is fired. From his headquarters, Nick Cloot laughs.

Story by Peter David, pencils by Jeff Purves, inks by Marie Severin.

Looking distinguished yet rather unrecognizable in Marvel Comics #1000, Rick Jones has a one-page appearance in 1999 from Peter David & Adam Kubert (one of my all-time favorite creative teams).

Peter David & Adam Kubert were a creative team on the Incredible Hulk series which I liked a lot.
