Default Tyger Tiger (Jessan Hoan): Crimelord of Madripoor

It's quite a jump to go from being a bank executive to the crimelord of an island nation like Madripoor, but that was the path Jessan Hoan's life took when she was abducted by a group of criminals known as The Reavers (back in Uncanny X-Men #229, cover-dated May 1988).

Her tale of what happened after that incident was part of a 10-part Wolverine adventure in Marvel Comics Presents (1988), and currently she has shown up in the recent Black Widow series written by sisters Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska.

    so what happened to her?
hopefully her portrayal can be more sophisticated now.

When you say "what happened to her?", do you mean after that X-Men issue, or more recently?

The story of how she went from just Jessan Hoan to Tyger Tiger was originally told in Marvel Comics Presents in 1988.

    Wolverine #4 Feb 1989
    "Bloodsport!"
One evening Chancellor Ranjamaryam, the Prince's chancellor, runs through the deserted nighttime streets
of Madripoor lowtown chased by two men: One strong muscled man and a gaunt old man in sun glasses.
They chase him to the ground and he begs them to spare him, that he will give them anything they want.
The Men, bound by honor to their employer, refuse the chancellor's offers and slay him.
Ranjamaryam's body is pulled out of the harbor later by Police Chief Tai, and attracts the attention of Patch,
who comes to do his own investigation because Ranj was an old friend of his.
When asking Tai about the murder he learns that Prince Baran was planning on naming Tyger Tiger
as the new crimelord of Madripoor, and that someone might not be taking too kindly to this appointment.
Patch decides to go off to follow his own leads gained from his investigation of Ranj's corpse.

Meanwhile at the airport hanger owned by South Seas Skyways, it's owner
and primary pilot Archie Corrigan is being confronted by the men who killed Ranjamaryam.
They introduce themselves as Roughouse and Bloodsport and they warn him against taking business from Tyger Tiger.
Bloodscream places his hand on Corrigan's hand causing him extreme pain and leaving his hand print on the man's body.
They depart repeating their warning and advising him that if he takes another delivery for Tyger again they will come for his life.

Tracking Ranj's scent, Logan tracks it back to the chancellor's home where he slips past the armed guards.
Inside there is a table set for two, and upon finding a woman's handkerchief locks on the scene,
realizing who it belongs to Logan realizes that this complicates things. He tracks the scent to a classy hotel in Uppertown
and in the room his fears are proven correct when he finds the New Mutant, Karma sleeping in the room.
Without revealing himself to her he asks her what she is doing there.
She explains that she is duty bound to help her uncle General Nguyen Ngoc Coy,
and she is horrified when Logan informs her that the chancellor was murdered earlier this evening.
Departing, he warns her to sort out her loyalties as she will be forced to suffer the consequences.

The next day in Lowertown, Lindsay McCabe and Jessica Drew are strolling through the central bazaar
when their shopping is interrupted by Roughouse who attempts to charm the ladies into joining him for dinner
before Bloodscream tells him that they have work to be done. As he walks away he offers the ladies a night on the town.
Jessica is about give him a piece of her mind when Lindsay talks her out of doing it considering that Roughouse is "built like a brick".
Their attention is soon turned to screams down the street where they see a bloody woman collapse to the ground.
Learning where the woman came from, Jessica sprints off and uses her remaining Spider-Woman powers to gain access to the building.
Inside she sees the aftermath of a massacre, and the message "Tyger is dead" scrawled on the wall in blood.
Returning to Lindsay, Jessica finds that the girl is dead and tells her friend that they could be standing on the brink of a full fledged drug war.

Later at the Princess Bar, Patch, Lindsay and Jessica compare notes with each other and they decide that the key to stopping Coy
from starting a gang war would be to find a way to defeat his enforcers and free Karma from whatever hold Coy has over her.
As they are discussing how continued attacks would begin to effect Tyger Tiger's criminal empire, Tyger enters the room and is introduced to

Lindsay and Jessica (the latter, being hostile toward the crime lord) She has come to ask Patch
to accompany her to her summons to the Prince's palace, a request that Logan takes up.

Along the way the two are attacked by Roughouse and Bloodscream, who smash Tyger's car.
As Roughouse beats on Logan, Tyger is attacked by Bloodscream.

When Bloodscream grabs her, Patch notices that she bleeds at his touch and decides to use his claws.
Before he can do so, Roughouse comes up behind and cold clocks him.

Before the battle can carry on further, Karma arrives and uses her powers to keep
Bloodscream and Roughouse at bay while Logan revives and takes Tyger Tiger with him.
Released from Karma's control the two enforcers have no idea what had just transpired.
Patch takes Tyger to the place where Jessica and Lindsay are staying and ask them
to take Tyger to one of the many safe houses in the area while he deals with matters.
When Jessica is hesitant to aid a criminal, Logan tells her that although Tyger is a crime lord she
doesn't deal in drugs or slaves, and that her predecessor Roch did, and that Tyger is the lesser of two evils.
Logan then travels out to South Sea Airways and calls in Tyger's marker to make Archie help him with a favor.
Archie is reluctant to help and more likely to put a shotgun blast into Logan but decides to hear him out.

While at the hotel where General Coy is staying he explains to Karma that with the removal of Roch
from the Madripoor underworld he can now move in and consolidate his power. He is soon visited by Bloodscream
and Roughouse who report that they failed to murder Tyger, but because Bloodscream tasted her blood, he can track her anywhere.
Coy is less than impressed by this as he has the Prince's favor presently but it may be limited should this problem continue to carry on.
When he learns that Patch had left the island with Corrigan he believes that Patch is more likely
going to attack his Opium crops on the mainland rather than flee for his life and hopes that Corrigan's
loyalty to him will remain steadfast, and begins planning an appropriate welcome just in case.
Coy then proposes a toast to the death of his enemies, a toast that Karma reluctantly drinks to.
When her uncle and his strong-men leave, she breaks the wine glass in her hand,
as she stares at her bleeding hand in tears she wonders what she is going to do.

if they bring her back, leave the dragon lady stereotype behind. Claremont's Asian-world fetishes were kind of glaring in retrospect.

She never really left. I'm pretty sure she's still supposed to be in charge of Madripoor.

    Wolverine #6 Apr 1989
    "Roughhouse!"
Karma has traveled to the royal home of Prince Baran, ruler of Madripoor hoping
to free the captured Lindsay McCabe, Jessica Drew and Tyger Tiger.
Feigning having a stalled car she uses her possession abilities to take control of one of the palace guards to get inside.
However, her awe at the Prince's wealth causes her control over the palace guard to slip.
Before he can capture her he is knocked out by Patch, who has broken into the castle with Archie Corrigan who are on the same mission as she.
As they sneak through the castle, Karma explains her situation, telling Patch that she started working for her corrupt uncle because her siblings
had gone missing and after exhausting all other resources she hoped that her uncle's underworld contacts might prove useful in finding them.
Finding that the moral price of siding with her uncle to be too high,
she had decided to turn on him and redeem herself by saving Jessica and the others.
As they travel through the court yard they almost stumble into the grasp of a tentacled creature that the prince has living in his fountain.

Elsewhere in the castle, Lindsay and Jessica are prisoners of Coy, and have been
forced into slave clothes for his, Bloodscream and Roughhouse's personal amusements.
Despite their capture Coy has kept the women alive for two reasons: the first to make them suffer for getting in his way,
and second to try and force them to give up the key to the indestructible suit of armor they have placed Tyger Tiger in.
Coy's minions at first do not believe the armor from Landau, Luckman and Lake
to be indestructible but soon learn the truth when they attempt to breach it.

When they refuse to play ball, Coy is about to hurt Lindsay when Patch suddenly enters the room
and slashes Bloodscream's throat, seemingly killing him in the process. Patch is then attacked by Roughhouse,
who manages to knock Patch out of the palace through a wall, but Logan takes him down by stabbing him in the gut with his claws.
As he enters the room to go after Coy, Bloodscream (having healed from his attack) grabs hold of Patch and starts draining his blood.
However before he can sap all of Logan's blood he is taken under the control of Karma.

As Patch struggles to get back into the fight, Roughhouse tosses him outside and goes after him.
When Bloodscream breaks free of Karma's control Archie attempts to bluff Coy into surrendering by threatening to shoot his niece.
Coy calls his bluff and distracts Archie long enough for Bloodscream to get near and disarm him.
As Logan battles Roughhouse outside, Jessica attempts to fight Bloodscream. When she realizes his very touch can make her bleed

she is assisted by the revived Tyger Tiger. With Tyger safe from Bloodscream's blood-draining abilities, Jessica goes outside
to help Patch battle Roughhouse. There the trio of combatants are grabbed by the creature.
However Patch manages to cut them free with his claws.

Inside Tyger manages to knock out Bloodscream sending Coy fleeing to seek cover.
Calling for Roughhouse the would-be crime czar is shocked to find that Jessica and Logan have knocked him out as well.

Logan is about to slay Coy when he is stopped by the arrival of Prince Baran and his palace guard,
who tells them that only he has the power to call for an execution in his own palace.

    Wolverine #7 May 1989
"Mr. Fixit Comes to Town!" Guest-starring the Incredible Hulk.
Tahoe, Nevada, Mr. Fixit has been hired out as a favor from his boss Berengetti to help out one of his fellow crime bosses.
The crime lord explains that he has begun working with a man from the far east that apparently was of high repute.
However recent news has left this crime lord wondering and has asked Mr. Fixit to travel out to Madripoor to investigate it.
The Hulk takes the job and when the crime boss offers him a position, Hulk respectfully declines.

In Madripoor at the palace of Prince Baran, Patch, Jessica Drew, Lindsay McCabe,
Karma her uncle and the unconscious Bloodsport and Roughhouse
are now before Prince Baran himself who has come to interrupt their battle.
The Prince is not happy that they have laid waste to one of the wings of his home and killed one of his prized pets,
but his tone changes when he sees Lindsay. Recognizing her as an actress, Baran professes that he is a big fan
and ushers her off and orders his troops to make everyone comfortable guests, much to the irritation of Coy.

Back in the States, the Hulk's chauffeur Connie stops to fill up his limo for gas.
She attracts the attention of a biker gang, who's lead attempts to sweet talk her into a "date".
When she refuses their leader Dex punches her in the face and scratches the paint job on the car with his knife.
This causes Mr. Fixit to come out of the car, and at first the gang stands up to him,
but when he starts trashing their bikes their leader tries to make a break for it.
Hulk stops him and warns him that he's a small timer in Las Vegas and that he should learn his place.
He then orders the gang to fix the paint job on his car before taking one of their bikes and continuing his trek to the airport.
While in Madripoor, Tyger Tiger paces around her room debating on what to do

and how to get out of the indestructible armor she's now trapped in. She's grabbed by Logan and pulled up to the roof.
When she calls him Wolverine, he reminds her that Wolverine is "dead" and she should call him Patch.

He reasons with her that Coy taking over Madripoor's entire criminal empire would be too dangerous,
and that while they both want him dead the best thing to do is allow him to take the abandoned drug
and slave markets in Madripoor so that nobody worse than Coy snaps up those black markets.

As the Hulk prepares to fly out of LAX, Coy and Tiger make a deal before Prince Baran who has his guards escort them out.
After both crime lords are gone, Baran invites Patch, Jessica and Lindsay on a tour of his palace.
Lindsay is surprised to find that Baran, a fan of hers, has an entire room dedicated to her
and her films with statues made of each of the roles she ever played in Hollywood movies.
Lindsay tells Baran that she stopped acting after an encounter with Viper landed her in the hospital.

While at the Sovereign Hotel, Coy vents his frustrations over losing complete dominion over the Madripoor crime market.
Karma goes into another room to change when she is intruded upon by Roughhouse who is drunk and looking to have "fun" with her.
Before he can do anything, Patch attacks him and Karma uses her powers to make him sleep.
Karma is glad to see Patch and she tells him her uncle got involved with an American crime boss and since the deal to rule Madripoor's
entire criminal market hadn't gone as planned this American mobster has sent his agent Mr. Fixit to deal with her uncle.
Despite the fact that Patch considers this predicament fitting for Coy, he agrees to save him from Mr. Fixit for Karma's sake.

After checking his sources to learn what he can about Mr. Fixit, Logan stakes out the Madripoor airport.
Sure enough the Hulk arrives and is forced to carry his own suitcases when his valet proves incapable of lugging them around.
However, he turns out to be an assassin who pulls a gun on Fixit, but when he shoots the Hulk point blank in the face with his gun,
it does nothing but irritate the brute. He calls on an army of men, making Logan realize that he wasn't the only one waiting on Fixit to arrive.
Logan decides to lend a helping hand when one of the goons attempts to kill a young girl.
Logan and the Hulk easily fight them off and when the Hulk contains an exploding hand grenade in his hand, all the attackers flee in fear.
Wanting to get to his hotel by sunrise, Fixit pays Logan to drive him to the Sovereign Hotel.
That morning Logan sees why: Mr. Fixit has transformed into a very familiar face, Bruce Banner.
Realizing that he's dealing with the Hulk, Logan tries his best not to laugh because he's going to find this job almost too fun.

This story is continued next issue...

    Wolverine #8 Jun 1989
"If It Ain't Broke..." Guest-starring the Incredible Hulk.
    Continued from last issue...

At the Sovereign Hotel, the Hulk comes out of the shower and is furious to find that someone has replaced all of his suits
and stuffed his suitcases with torn purple pants, with a note saying "We know who you are! Get out of town!".
Unknown to the Hulk this is the first of many torments by Logan. This is the first torment orchestrated by the mutant in order to manipulate him
into wrecking Nguyen Coy's operations in the Madripoor crime scene. Joe Fixit is furious and vows to get back at whoever played this joke on him.

That evening, while Patch, Jessica Drew, General Coy, his niece Karma, Lindsay McCabe, Tyger Tiger and Captain Tai
of the Madripoor police enjoy a night of music at the Princess Bar, things are livened up by the arrival of the Hulk.

When he smashes through the door, O'Donnell is furious until the Hulk intimidates him and then pays for the damage.
Knowing that Patch is the man to go to for information in Madripoor, and unaware that it was he who put all the purple pants in his hotel room,
the Hulk goes to him seeking information on Coy. Everyone believes a fight is about to break out
and start placing bets, but much to everyone's surprise, Patch agrees to help the Hulk out.

Taking him outside, Hulk tells him that before he goes after the man he's been hired to look for, he wants to know what he deals in.
Before they can go anywhere a Madripet truck zooms by splashing the Hulk. In a fury the Hulk bounds over to the truck and smashes it,

realizing too late that it's carrying waste. With his suit ruined, Patch decides to further
torment the Hulk by providing him the "only" clothes in his size; a pair of purple pants.

Patch takes him to a massage parlor that is really a front for the slave trade and convinces the Hulk to help him bust out all the captured women.
They rough up the establishments operators, and when the owner tries to give Logan trouble for the incident, the Hulk smashes up his operation
and warns the flesh peddler not to get him angry. Going back to his hotel room, the Hulk is tricked by Logan to wait until dawn.
When he reverts back into Bruce Banner, Logan makes sure it's Banner, not the Hulk that reaps the spoils of his rescuing the women.
When the Hulk returns at night he is angry that Banner managed to have the fun and not him, playing right into Logan's hand.

That night, Logan takes him on another bogus trip, this time tricking him into
going to a shrine right above the largest Cocaine processing plant in Madripoor.
Suspicious of Patch, the Hulk sends him first, however Patch manages to slip away and use his claws to cut through the floor
and send the Hulk crashing into the processing plant. When it's guards attack him, he dismantles the place and sends the guards fleeing.
When Logan explains to him what he did, the Hulk realizes that he's been set up. Before he can go anything further, Coy shows up with his
subordinates Roughhouse and Bloodscream, furious that the man sent out to help his operations have done nothing but tear them down.
When the Hulk realizes that Coy is a crime lord, he realizes he was tricked into helping mobsters
and refuses to do anything crooked since his employer Berengetti doesn't deal in illegal operations.

Furious of being used as a pawn, Fixit asks Logan how he is going to stop him from turning Madripoor upside down and take over.
Logan explains to him that half the day is sunlight making him vulnerable when he turns into Bruce Banner.
The Hulk doesn't like this and after decking Patch in the face, agrees to leave. The following night, Patch organizes a flight for the Hulk
to get back to the United States, giving him an opportunity to play a final joke on the Hulk:
Telling him he's flying east to enjoy the all evening flight.
He fools Hulk into taking a flight going west, in the direction of the rising sun.
When the Hulk realizes it, it's far too late and he turns back into Bruce Banner cursing Patch's name.
