Doctor Fate Appreciation Thread (2019)

Geoff Johns brought back Kent Nelson in Rebirth, only to be shelved again by Tynion. I guess he has to leave his mark like Trump. :[

But did Geoff Johns specifically bring back "Kent Nelson"? I didn't think it was clearly defined back in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 who was the "Dr. Fate" that appeared.
Besides, Paul Levitz had reintroduced Kent Nelson (as the Dr. Fate who had been a member of the JSA) already in his DCYou Doctor Fate run.

I wouldn't even mention that DCYou Dr Fate series at all because Tynion IV has retconned the hell out of that series... and so did Geoff with Rebirth at not even acknowledging it. Hell, the helmet of Nabu was like an iPad in the DCYou series and Nabu was almost a "Friendly" AI construct for Khalid. In that series for Kent Nelson and just like Hal Jordan, he "Crafted" his own helmet with no Nabu.

Because of Fate's affiliation the the JSA, his history is ill-defined and ever-changing. When three writers using him in recent years disagree on the character's status, that's a problem. With the musical characters, no one's happy except people who like the current version. At least if the character stayed the same character there's something to bui;ld upon and not change totally.

I wonder when Dr Fate's energy signature became all about the ankhs?

I loved that Dr Fate mini drawn by Giffen in his "disembodied screaming mouths" phase. That was totally up my alley when I was a teen. I also really liked the series when Inza (and/or Linda?) were Dr Fate. Man, that was a long time ago.
