    Uncanny X-Men #6 Jul 1964
    "Sub-Mariner Joins the Evil Mutants!"
Professor Xavier reads a newspaper article about the Sub-Mariner. He wonders whether or not the Sub-Mariner is a mutant.

Meanwhile Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are at their new headquarters on an island, pondering the same thing.
Magneto tries to recruit the Sub-Mariner by projecting his astral form under the ocean.
Professor Xavier does the same thing from the mansion, but hides his astral form when he senses Magneto's astral form nearby.

Magneto finds Namor's underwater kingdom, but decides not to approach the Sub-Mariner following an outburst that he witnesses.
Instead, Magneto approaches one of the other Atlanteans and makes a deal.
In exchange for delivering a message from him, Magneto claims that the Atlantean can
become the new ruler of Atlantis, if the Sub-Mariner joins the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Back at the mansion, Professor Xavier informs his students that Magneto is attempting to recruit Namor,
and that he knows where Magneto's new base is located. The X-Men board a ship and head out to stop Magneto.
Namor is convinced into meeting with Magneto on his secret island.
He is quickly impressed by how the island is run using Magneto's powers and a giant magnet at the center of the island.

The X-Men arrive and a battle begins amongst the two groups.
Magneto destroys the X-Men's ship, but they use an ice-craft to make it to shore.
Cyclops realizes that the giant magnet powers everything, so he tries to destroy it, but Quicksilver attacks before he can do anything.

The X-Men subdue Quicksilver, which causes the Scarlet Witch to fear for her brother's safety.
Magneto becomes angered with the Scarlet Witch and yells at her. At this point, both Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch
again question Magneto's actions, as in X-Men #5, but continue to follow him.
Xavier mentions this may be because they are being controlled subconsciously.

The Sub-Mariner realizes what type of man he has allied himself with, so he turns against Magneto and destroys the magnet's controls.
The X-Men break into the lab, so Magneto, Toad and Mastermind run away.
The Scarlet Witch demands that Quicksilver be returned to her, but the X-Men do not comply.

A short battle breaks out that is stopped by Professor Xavier, when he brings Quicksilver, under his mental control, to the Scarlet Witch.

Namor decides that he has had enough of fighting for the day, so he starts to head back to his kingdom
when he is attacked by Magneto and his giant magnet. The Sub-Mariner overcomes the beating he is taking and destroys the magnet.
The X-Men watch as the Sub-Mariner withdraws back to his kingdom, then observe Magneto and the rest of the Brotherhood retreat in his own jet plane.

    Fantastic Four #28 Jul 1964
"We Have to Fight the X-Men!"
The Thing is moving Alicia Masters' latest sculpture which this time represents himself, as Reed and Sue are reading the latest
newspaper reports about the mysterious mutant heroes known as the X-Men. When telling the others about it, the Torch recalls
how he recently fought alongside Iceman. After finishing his task, Ben upsets Alicia by bringing up her step-father, the Puppet Master.

Incidentally, the Puppet Master has agreed to meet with another foe of the Fantastic Four, the Mad Thinker,
who has developed a plan to destroy their mutual foes. The Thinker has determined that the X-Men's telepathic leader
could be used to manipulate the X-Men into attacking the FF. Having tabulated circumstantial evidence to make a passing
composition of this mysterious leader, the Puppet Master is able to mold a new puppet out of his clay.
Despite the fact that it is lacking any facial features, it enthralls the X-Men's leader Professor X, at the X-Men's school.

Under the Puppet Master's control, Charles Xavier summons the X-Men and orders them to destroy the Fantastic Four.

Even though they are confused by these orders, the X-Men comply and fly their helicopter to the Baxter Building.
Initially, they act friendly to the Fantastic Four, who invite the young mutants into their home.
Reed is showing his latest work when the X-Men's field leader Cyclops launches the attack with his optic blasts.
With Cyclops and Beast battling Mister Fantastic and the Human Torch, Marvel Girl uses her telekinetic powers against the Thing,
and Angel and Iceman attack the Invisible Girl. When the male members of the Fantastic Four begin gaining the upper hand,
Mr. Fantastic orders them to pretend to surrender. The X-Men flee the scene with Sue as their prisoner.
Reed and the others follow the X-Men with the Pogo Plane to the Mad Thinker's hideout,
where the X-Men are commanded by Xavier to continue their battle against the Fantastic Four.

The Mad Thinker launches various weapons to subdue the Fantastic Four. The Puppet Master and Thinker reveal themselves,
and Professor X is ordered to make the X-Men unconscious. However, the Beast resists Xavier's mental command
and breaks the puppet which binds their leader. The Mad Thinker orders his Awesome Android to his aid and battle against the X-Men ensues.
Meanwhile, Fantastic Four break free from the Thinker's traps and come to help the mutants. However,
it's Professor X who defeats the Android by "applying mental pressure to a certain section of the Android's artificial nervous system."
During the confusion, the Thinker and Puppet Master escape, leaving the Awesome Android behind.
With the threat now over, Professor X orders the X-Men to return home,

leaving the Fantastic Four to wonder if they will ever meet the mutant group again.

    Uncanny X-Men #58 Jul 1969
    "Mission: Murder!"
    Continued from last issue...

While watching a news story about Larry Trask, son of the late Sentinel inventor
Bolivar Trask, Iceman and Beast are attacked by a new model Sentinel.
As the news story plays on and Trask reveals that he has rebuilt and redesigned his father’s robots with new weapons
and that they can be pre-programmed with orders or operated by a remote control helmet, Bobby and Hank fight their attacker.
While Bobby is captured by the Sentinel, Beast is forced to flee the scene when he realizes that he is outclassed against his Sentinel attacker.

While in Egypt, Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Angel take a break from their search for Scott's brother Alex to listen to answer a radio call from Hank.
Hank explains to the group of Larry Trask and his Sentinels and Bobby's subsequent capture,
but has to cut the transmission short to focus on avoiding capture himself.
Warren defies Cyclops' orders and decides to fly back to the United States on his own to help his friends against the Sentinel menace.

While at the secret hideout of Larry Trask, Larry talks to Judge Robert Chalmers who expresses concerns about the "proof"
Larry has provided that all mutants are a menace and to tell him that the public is not entirely sold on the idea.
Larry agrees to let the press talk to the captured X-Man once he is rendered harmless.
When Bobby arrives at the Sentinel base, Larry has him treated to a chemical steam bath that nullifies his ice powers for four hours.
When Bobby attempts to attack Trask, a Sentinel stops him and Larry reveals that a hidden video camera had recorded the attempted attack
which he intends to use as proof of the "mutant menace" that he is trying to sell and vows to get revenge on the X-Men for his father’s death.

Taken to a holding cell, Iceman finds both Lorna and Alex there. He learns from Alex that Trask had designed him a special suit to control
and regulate his powers and given him the codename Havok. Alex then tells Bobby that he was given all this in return for making a deal
with Trask so that Lorna would be left alone. However, Bobby brands Alex a coward before hearing this, and as he's being told a Sentinel
enters the room and grabs Lorna. Realizing that Trask's word was meaningless he unleashes a powerful plasma blast that destroys the Sentinel.
Entering the room with another Sentinel, Larry then uses a device that nullifies Alex's powers.
This horrifies Alex as this will reawaken the mutant abilities of Professor Abdol allowing him to transform into the Living Monolith once more.

While in Egypt Ahmet Abdol is meeting with government officials about his altercation with the X-Men earlier when he suddenly feels his powers
returning to him. However before he can completely transform into the Living Monolith once more, two Sentinels arrive on the scene and douse
Abdol with a special adhesive that blocks him from the cosmic rays that feed his power, neutralizing his threat and allowing for an easy capture.

Trask sends out an army of Sentinels to capture all of the remaining mutants in the world and a pair captures Angel with ease.
This capture is watched through the horrified eyes of Scott and Jean who witness this
capture while looking out the window of the airplane they are using to fly back to the States.

While at a secret hide out, Mesmero and Magneto are attacked by another Sentinel.
When Magneto attempts to stop the robot, it blasts him revealing that the being that Mesmero has been
working for all these months was not the real Magneto, but a robot, and he is easily captured by the Sentinels.

With only a few mutants still free, Larry considers his task a success and welcomes
the arrival of Judge Chalmers who Larry proudly shows his work too.
When Chalmers realizes that the captured mutants are being kept in suspended animation
he expresses his displeasure that the mutants are not detained in a more humane way.
This comment infuriates Larry who tells the judge that if he cannot count on his support he will deal with the mutant menace alone.
However, Chalmers manages to calm down the emotional Trask.
Larry then turns his attention to the members of the X-Men who are still not yet captured,
who are planning on locating the kidnapped mutants with a mini Cerebro unit.
As Trask watches this, he swears that he will capture these mutants.
He swears on the medallion that he is wearing and reflects that it was a gift from his father shortly
after the death of his mother, at that time Bolivar had asked his son to swear to never take it off.

Larry's recollection is cut short when suddenly his base is attacked by the Banshee who attempts to destroy the Sentinels with his sonic screams,
however, Trask had built Sentinels specifically to deal with him and they knock out the sonic-screaming mutant with a sonic blast counter attack.
Furious at this attack, Larry orders the Sentinels to hunt down the remaining mutants and destroy them.
Not wanting to be party to murder, Chalmers attempts to stop Larry, and is forced to strike the boy.
The force of the blow knocks the medallion off of Larry, and upon that
happening the Sentinels detect the presence of another mutant, Larry himself.

A nearby Sentinel grabs Larry and informs him that because he is a mutant his command over them is null and void,
and that despite this they are going to carry out his last command; destroy all mutants.

    Uncanny X-Men #59 Aug 1969
    "Do or Die, Baby!"
    Continued from last issue...

Cyclops, Beast and Marvel Girl are using a mini Cerebro unit to track down all of
the mutants that have recently been captured by Larry Trask's Sentinels.
However, their jet-car is blasted out of the sky causing the three X-Men to fall to their doom,

but they are rescued at the last minute by MG's telekinetic powers.
While in the secret hideout of the Sentinels, it has been revealed that Larry Trask, ironically, is a mutant himself,
a revelation that is learned when the medallion given to him from his father was accidentally removed
and turns out to have nullified and shielded his mutant powers from the Sentinels scanners.
This is confirmed by Judge Chalmers who knew the truth all along and explains that Larry's father,
the late Bolivar Trask, created the medallion after Larry's mutation precognition powers foretold his mother’s death.
With the Sentinels no longer following his orders now that he has been outed as a mutant,
the Sentinels carry out Larry's last command as a "human", to capture all the remaining mutants and destroy them.

In rapid succession, the Sentinels seek out and attempt to capture the remaining mutants left in the world.
They find opposition when trying to capture Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Toad; however easily manage to capture Mastermind, Blob and Unus.
While Judge Chalmers begins to consider what to do about this situation, not wishing to be party to
the genocide of all known mutants, the Sentinels detect a concentration of mutant energy signatures.
This turns out to be Cyclops, Marvel Girl and the Beast who are now scaling the mountain which hides the Sentinel base.
They are opposed by Sentinels which they easily defeat and manage to break into the Sentinel base.

Inside, they hide as a Sentinel prisoner craft arrives with the captured Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Toad.
Realizing that the Sentinels are conditioned to deal with any given mutants threats by identifying who they are,
the three X-Men trade costumes with the former Brotherhood of Evil Mutants members, Cyclops taking Quicksilver's costume,
Marvel Girl taking Scarlet Witch's and the Beast wearing Toad's. When the Sentinels that captured the three other mutants
attempt to take them to the holding chambers they are caught off guard. Confused by the unique costumes
and not prepared to deal with different powers, the Sentinels fall easily to Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Beast's counter attack on the Sentinels.

As this is happening, Judge Chalmers awakens Larry Trask from his suspended animation.
Larry has a vision of Havok getting injured in the coming battle. When Chalmers asks what he can do to stop the Sentinels,
he traces Larry's glance at the device he used to neutralize Havok's powers earlier. However Chalmers
misinterprets Larry's attempts to tell him what the gun is for as an order to kill Havok, which Chalmers refuses to do.

Cyclops and the others fight their way into the main chamber just as the Judge
realizes what the gun is really for and uses it to reactivate Havok's powers.
Realizing what Chalmers has done, the Sentinel in the room blasts him before Cyclops can attempt to destroy it.
Cyclops then blasts open the cyro-tube that is keeping Alex in suspended animation.
Now free, Havok turns his powerful cosmic energy blasts on the Sentinel.

As the Sentinels begin to administer the Judge first aid as part of their programming to protect humans,
Chalmers tells Cyclops that the only way to beat the Sentinels is with logic. Cyclops then suggests to the Sentinels
that it would be easier to eliminate the source that causes the creation of mutants to make their jobs easier.
As Cyclops is telling them this, Havok, still believing that he is a menace, attempts to commit suicide.
Realizing what Alex is going to do, Scott chases after him.

Meanwhile, the Sentinels ponders Cyclops' suggestion and realize that it's the very sun that is the cause
of mutants on Earth and with this logic considered the entire Sentinel army blasts off into space to try
and destroy the Sun, a mission that is destined to end in failure and the Sentinel’s destruction.

In the aftermath of the Sentinels exodus, Cyclops and the others find Alex buried in a pile of rubble begging for help.
Realizing that his brother will need medical attention and psychiatric help in coming to
terms with his mutant nature, he decides to call one of the Professor’s old colleagues.
Shortly afterward, a call is made to Dr. Karl Lykos who agrees to see Alex.
As he is making arrangements with Scott, one of his patients suddenly slumps into unconsciousness.

    X-Factor #43 Aug 1989
Judgement War! Part 1 of 7. "Kidnaped!"
X-Factor's Ship suddenly loses control of it's functions and begins to fly off into space.
Acting quickly, the Ship erects a dome around the exposed part of it's hull where X-Factor was out relaxing.
As the Ship flies out into space, the part of Marvel Girl's mind that is Madelyne Pryor
    and the Phoenix Entity
causes her to smash through the dome to greet the stars.
However, MG being not as powerful as the Phoenix Entity begins to suffocate in the vacuum of space.

Quickely thinking, Archangel flies out and grabs her while the other members of X-Factor help pull them both back into the ship.
With Jean and Warren save, Iceman seals the hole temporarily until Ship can effectively repair itself.
As Cyclops tries to get MG to come to terms that she has the "best" part of all her
incarnations in her, the Ship passes through hyperspace and appears over a strange planet.

Although Ship cannot leave, he is able to scan the planet below and identifies that there is a war going on the planet,

and provides X-Factor with devices that allow them to understand the alien language on the planet below.
Suddenly they witness the appearance of a giant ship that dwarfs even Ship in size,
and are soon confronted by the Celestial known as Gammenon the Gatherer.
As Gammenon examines the Ship, X-Factor tries to make sense of the creature

and soon find themselves transported to the planet's surface below along with Scott's son Christopher.

They find themselves in the middle of a battle between the planets two dominant forces:
The Chosen, human like beings that have super-human abilities, and the Rejects, inhuman mutates that also have powers.
Unsure which side to fight for, Archangel makes up his mind when Princess Seera
of the Chosen is in danger of being crushed by a Reject and he rescues her.
He has broken a forbidden law of the land for touching the Princess, and mistaken for a Reject,
Warren is knocked out by Lord Rask, a rich Chosen warrior who hopes that he can
make even greater fortunes taking Warren as a slave and putting him to fight in the arenas.

Iceman likewise is believed to be a Reject in his ice-form and faces against a fire wielding Chosen known as Lev.
Before they can match powers, Bobby is struck on the head from behind and falls into the battle below.
Jean meanwhile tries frantically to keep approaching Rejects from attacking her and young Christopher.
However, one of the Rejects telepathic jammers uses its powers on Jean, shutting down her mind
and sending Christopher falling to the ground as the battle rages on around him.

As Gammenon lowers to the planet surface over the battle, Cyclops is knocked out by a Reject
that is not only impervious to his optic blasts, but also can fire energy blasts from it's eyes as well.
Beast goes to the rescue of a female Reject warrior named Zharkah.
However he learns that his concern was for naught as she has entropic abilities and slays her attacker.
Noticing the Celestial's descent, both side of the conflict flee the scene to avoid
getting crushed under it's massive boot, with Beast accompanying Zharkah.

As the Chosen forces pull out of the battle, Lev spots Iceman rising from the group, his ice form wearing off.
Believing that he is a class of the Chosen referred to as a Dualer (those who have two forms)
she is furious of how attacking one of her "kind" will have on her social standing.
However, despite her feelings, she helps him along and learns that he has no memory of who he is or where he came from.
As Marvel Girl is being carried away by the Rejects, one of the Chosen comes across Christopher and takes the child into his possession.
Thinking it is one of the genetically engineered Chosen, he wonders how the child made it out into
the middle of a battle and decides to take it with him to see if he can make money off his discovery.

With the battle field cleared of all but the dead, Cyclops revives and finds that he has been left behind.
With the foot of Gammenon just meters away, Cyclops tries in vein to blast
it with his optic blast and remarks how this is indeed a stupid way to die.

that it would be easier to eliminate the source that causes the creation of mutants to make their jobs easier.

Script by Chris Claremont and Roy Thomas, pencils by Neal Adams, inks by Tom Palmer
Did she tap into her locked away memories from the future there? She can't normally access that superpowered pink form. I know it wasn't the intent at the time, but it would explain this feat.

I love retroactive context. I never thought of it but I'll take this as the earliest example of Jean unknowingly using her pink form which was locked away at the time

Incidentally, Claremont wrote it? I thought he didn't join the book until 1975?
