(she started the movie killing those that opposed her, and ended it the same way. A neutral stance. Not a sacrifice, not a choice imo.)

I'm confused. I think the movie wants me to think Jean's destiny was to be consumed by her thirst for power, and that she overcame it in the end. When for all I know, she was consumed by the force, because she killed a bunch of folks and flew away?

In the end the movie did not make a statement enough for conclusions to be made, and no one will probably ever be able agree about what the point it was making was. (Because the lines of good and evil were not clearly defined and Jean doesnt tell us what she's thinking most of the time, she's just confused. )
The only person she ever kills besides aliens is Mystique and that is presented more as an accident similar to her causing the death of her mother. The cops she attacked were only stated to be injured.

I think the film’s statement is the same as Days of Future Past based on the opening narrations being near identical.

Jean replaced Mystique as the person he had to save from going down a dark path.

Pretty sure they were dead before that.

    It could be something else.
I can see them doing AvX in the comics and again this time it will be after Jean becomes Phoenix again. The XMen decide to support Phoenix/Jean and thereÂ’s a new conflict with the Avengers is there. Then IÂ’d bet they do a movie out out of it, AvX.

One of the biggest tragedies of this universe is that we never got to see Magneto acknowledging Peter as his son.
This is the closest thing we will ever get.

Poor Lord Claremont, trying to rationalize his way into thinking these Fox-Men films didn't ravage his legacy.
Let the flames destroy all but that which is pure and true!

It was the preliminary screenings that altered the ending of the movie. In the original Jean Grey was meant to die staying true to the comics. But the reaction from those fans caused it to be altered to something more ambiguous.

The DPS told over 3 movies with all its campness would probably also failed as the audience knows the way it ends and have seen it before. Additionally, the story isn't that epic to be told over 3 movies.
Because elements of the Dark Phoenix Saga do not work in this setting. Jean having the same fate she had in X3(becoming evil and/or dying) would make the statement in DOFP about changing fate and Xavier not wanting that future moot. That’s why the movie avoids making Jean a full blown villain.

Just realized they foreshadowed Mystique’s death in Apocalypse.

Another apocalypse tie in was storm’s statement to Scott regarding jean killing mystique:

“Sometimes you want to believe someone is something they’re not... then when you find out who they really are, it’s too late.” she’s referring to her experience following apocalypse.

But it’s not really surprising when you considering that the tracking data showed that people were more aware of Rocketman coming out than Dark Phoenix. Fox’s marketing campaign for this film was almost nonexistent as the result of the merger, changing the dates after the trailer dropped, and putting it in June was the killing blow. I have actually seen many people on social media saying “there was a new X-Men movie” and “I didn’t know when this was coming out” a week after it came out...

If this wasn’t for Disney’s last minute marketing push this movie would have done a lot worse.
