Also, the ending changing had nothing to do with Captain Marvel.

We heard that in one cut, Jean Grey dies, which wasn’t received well. But overall, the major ending change-up, executed in reshoots, entailed going from an intimate ending with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) against Jessica Chastain’s Vuk. The feeling from the audience in testing was that they wanted to see all the X-Men heroes fighting in the end. There have been reports out there that the ending was changed-up because it was too similar to Captain Marvel. This isn’t true: No one on the Fox/Dark Phoenix production side had any intel of what Captain Marvel would be like before it was released. It was the all-team reshoot that pushed Dark Phoenix from its original Nov. 2 release date (which went to ultimate 4-time Oscar winner and Fox blockbuster finale pre-merger Bohemian Rhapsody) to Feb. 14. We understand Kinberg got to make the film he wanted to make, and was flexible about reshoots with the studio. Many would like to feasibly blame a screenwriter-turned-first time $200M production film director on missing the mark here. However, as we wrote, Kinberg demonstrated his finesse in saving previous Fox/Marvel and X-Men productions. Fox production executives could have gone with a more seasoned director, but decided not to, and in doing so, they failed in riding herd on Kinberg early enough. By the time they did decided to ride monitor Kinberg, it was too late, and production was too far down the road.

Why wasn’t the Selene role instead played by Olivia Munn’s Psylocke character? That would’ve been a nice nod.

Apparently that was the plan but she was working on the Predator.

Too bad, would've liked to have seen her come back.

You have to take into consideration other factors like weather, holidays, NBA/NHL Finals, Baseball and what else came out.

Here in Dallas the storms took out most of the city. We had Summer school delayed for a week because the power was out at some many schools.
And in the area where it was the WORST-you had some major theaters gets taken out like Movie Studio Grill and one in a mall.

We just had another one that and is set for a week long of storms-that will keep folks at home.

So a lot of movies are going to be relying on the overseas markets for a time.
You can group ticket buyers into two groups:

    1) People who make a special trip to see a movie because they want to see that movie
    2) People who want to see a movie and will see whatever is playing

In the US, the general trend is Group 1 is increasing and Group 2 is in decline. There are far too many other entertainment options now. People look at what's showing and then decide streaming, video games or something else is a better option. Sports or weather impact Group 2, not Group 1.

Overseas (especially China), there's more of an audience for going to the movies to be entertained.

Marketing tends to be focused on Group 2 more than Group 1. The goal is awareness. Someone looks at the list of movies playing at their local multiplex and sees "Dark Phoenix" and they remember seeing a trailer, tv spot or social mention and think it looks like a fun movie. When the goal is for a random person to decide they want to see Dark Phoenix and be able to vaguely understand what's going on, then it changes the way the film is made.

Marvel has excelled at marketing to Group 1 and making their films event-driven, must-sees. Fox expect that audience to just show up because it's an X-Men movie.

My theory about what is also happening at the box office is a lot of budgeting from audiences. Based on trailers and schedules, a large group of movie fans know which movies they plan on seeing. They buy tickets in advance and they have to make decisions about other movies (i.e. I'll wait to see Dark Phoenix when it's on Redbox or Netflix) because they already have decided to go see Spider-man: Homecoming or Toy Story. And there's no amount of marketing that can change that since the cost of tickets just keeps increasing.

Also, in the summer it used to be that tv wasn't taking away the audience from movies. Networks had reruns. There wasn't anything on tv, it was hot and even if you are on vacation you might take the family to go see a movie in the evening. Now, you can get caught up on a tv series or stream a movie from your hotel on vacation.

I think I did this before it worth seeing again

Feb 8(Week before ) Lego Movie 2, What Men Want
Feb 14(Release week) Fighting with My Family, Happy Death Day 2U
Feb 22 How to train your dragons 3,
March 1 A Madea Family Funeral
    March 8 Captain Marvel
    March 22 Captive State

It vast understatement to say it would do better

Previous weeks John Wick 3 (May 17) ,may 24 Aladdin (2019),Bright Burn, May 31 Godzilla
June 7 Pets 2, Dark Phoenix
    June 14 MiB, Shaft
June 21 Toy Story, Child Play

If it was released Feb 14 regardless of how weak of a movie it is there is nothing arguably a better brand for 2 or 3 weeks. Even with Godzilla,Aladdin and MIB being disappointments themselves they are franchise that would take attention away. All Dark Phoenix had to in Feb was beat How to Train dragons and Madea. Release date was difference between hey this suppose to be summer blockbuster and hey this movie is pretty good for a movie release in February. I am high critical of DP but this movie doesn't take a 83% drop in Feb.

Then someone screwed up. Why wasn't she contracted? You'd think they'd have the actors on multiple picture contracts.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/he...-plans-1216859

At the time, preparations for the Disney-Fox acquisition were in full swing. Marketing and publicity and distribution execs were either being forced out or had one eye on the door. "The campaign was muddled," says a former Fox executive. "Was this the final X-Men movie? Was it about a character going back? This movie just got lost."

An NRG tracking poll taken in May showed that Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios' rival superhero franchise, was rated higher than Dark Phoenix as a choice for moviegoers — and that's after Endgame had been playing in theaters for five weeks already. "Definite awareness never got a score over 75 on tracking," says one insider. "An X-Men movie had never been below 90."

"When definite awareness of Rocketman is higher than an X-Men movie, you know you're in strange territory," says another insider.
Damn, without Disney’s last minute marketing push this would have made less money than Rocketman.

The comic book continuity is MESSY as hell, especially when coming to the crappy "Phoenix Force" concept they added later on in order to launch the redundant and shoddy X-Factor title.

In the Foxverse, original timeline(s), "PHOENIX" was the alternate personality of Jean Grey - generated by Xavier's heavy mental blocks over the years. In the original timeline, Jean ALREADY displayed the "firebird energy signature", because that is his natural mutant power. Period. "The Last Stand" established it, canonically. Like it or not.

There are several hints in X2 too, however.

In the new timeline, she never developed an alternate personality, because Xavier's mental blocks were VERY limited. He just suppressed the memories of the car incident and her father's refusal/repulsion.

She absorbed the "shapeless" Cosmic Force, and the Force became one with her and her Phoenix power. That's it. She did not develop any alternate personality, but she was driven "insane/out of control" by this unlimited, infinite power. Much more in line with Claremont's continuity and original intent back in the seventies, right? Right.

She is Phoenix. She has been Phoenix since "Apocalypse" occurred. Case closed.

Went to see it yesterday finally with my wife and kids. My wife and son thought it was boring, my daughter liked it, and I was somewhere in between. Like Apocalypse, I thought this was just “okay” but it could’ve been really good with few changes, which is a shame. As it stands, I feel like the FOX X-franchise went out with a whimper instead of a bang; though Logan and Deadpool 2 were both great, so at least there’s that.

Now onto the MCU I guess... whenever they get around to making the X-men great again.

That is really upsetting, and it seems to make sense. Since they gave Selene purple hair, and an affinity for knives. I can see how that was originally meant to be Psylocke. Although...hopefully Psylocke wouldn't have had the same end as Selene. Considering how she was portrayed in Apocalypse, her being brushed aside so easily wouldn't have felt right.

This doesn't make sense, there was noticeable pivot on the special effects to distance from the Captain Marvel visuals.

What happened to fiery Phoenix then?
