A New Green Lantern Series by N.K. Jemisin Will Help Relaunch DC's Young Animal Imprint

From the minds of multiple Hugo Award-winner N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell comes Far Sector, a story about Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, the Green Lantern tasked with protecting the City Enduring, a sprawling megalopolis where billions of people all live in relative peace because the city’s residents have been made not to feel emotions. Jemisin described her as a “frontier sheriff,” apart from the Green Lantern Corps. With the absence of emotion, crime isn’t much of a problem Mullein has to deal with. But when feeling begins to return to the city, a whole host of challenges come along with it, and it’s up to Jo to take care of business.

In a Twitter thread, Jemisin explained that while Jo’s very much a Green Lantern, the uniqueness of her ring and outpost put her in a position none of her fellow Corps members can scarcely imagine. Despite being located on a Dyson swarm (a variation of a Dyson sphere), the City Enduring is something of a cosmic “frontier” with an epic history of its own involving colonialism.

It sounds like a nice story concept but it’s still another Green Lantern in a mythos already overcrowded with fans wanting their favorite to be showcased. I like the story but the character has no true longevity as a Green Lantern.

I have no interest in reading any mainstream DC GL title but this Young Animal GL does interest me.

I'm extremely hyped about this! While I wished they had done this title with John, I will happily get hyped for a black written and black drawn Green Lantern book. This is definitely gonna be my first physical Green Lantern trade.
THE SIGNAL (Duke Thomas) is DC's secret shonen protagonist so I made him a fandom wiki

also, check out "The Signal Tape" a Duke Thomas fan project.

    currently following:
    • DC: Red Hood: The Hill
    • Marvel: TBD
    • Manga (Shonen/Seinen): One Piece, My Hero, Dandadan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiju No. 8, Reincarnation of The Veteran Soldier, Oblivion Rouge, ORDEAL, The Breaker: Eternal Force

So this is out of continuity? Kind of like Green Lantern: Legacy?

The art is gonna be excellent and it's another black female character leading a book ...now I'm just waiting for DC to push a black female led book that's not a part of the outlier of an imprint.

Wow I never realized how well that could work. It's a shame DC couldn't think of any ideas like this. With Static it's not really their fault (new 52 a side). Hopefully when aqualad comes back He will have a good showcasing.

I understand that many posters here are excited to see a writer of color writing a Green Lantern book. But I can't help but feel like this is an attempt for DC to distance further away from fans of existing GL characters having their own book, like John Stewart. I'm sorry but this is a book I will not support, until DC gets behind existing GL characters like John Stewart to have his own book. I think some people here don't realize that the more you support these new creations, the less likely that characters like John Stewart will have his own solo.

I think we can support these titles while also still asking for solo books for characters like John Stewart and Vixen at the same time.

    Vixen - Champion of Anansi

I don't see it that way at all. DC is gonna misuse John regardless and this book will likely be relegated to its own space/continuity anyway. Will I buy it issue to issue, unlikely because treatment of DC's characters of color has led to me restricting the books I actually buy from them unless I'm really interested. However, I will support this book by buying the trade and (if I hear good things) I very well may buy a couple issues because one thing that MAY get DC to actually treat John (and other characters of color) better is getting them to back more creators of color. Creators who will likely be more inclined to write characters of color who resonated with them much like they resonate with many underserved fans of color. Because if this book tanks, like any other book about or driven by people of color, DC will likely not learn the right lessons or the lesson you want them to learn anyway.

Had to give it to Cyborg, but Steel and Aqualad were damn close.

Honestly, I'm of the younger generation of DC fans, so my first introduction of Cyborg is through the Teen Titans series, but besides that I've never been a fan of any other version. He's somewhat boring in the comics, and to me doesn't have an appealing design.

I also think DC is pushing a little too hard on making every black character the smartest person in the world, though I get why. I want to like cyborg, but he seems like Steel and Mr. Terrific made younger.

Interestingly enough, Cyborg debuted before both Steel and Michael Holt.

I would love a storyline showing DC's Black superheroes hanging out, outside of being a hero. I want to see them socializing together and getting some down time or even kicking back at a cook out.
We are the Dora Milaje. We are the daughters of the 18 tribes of Wakanda. We are the teeth of the Panther God. Out of 10,000 years of sweat and bloodshed and battle are we born. We are the women of this ancient land. Deadliest of the species. And our time has come!

That will never truly happen with Lex Luthor & Bruce Wayne filing those top two spots.

    I would buy it.

Who the heck would write that?

I don't think Priest would do it. John Ostrander could use the work.
