Maybe he just didn't know Rage was in the hospital?

True... that scene could've happened any time before the Ultimates disbanded, which was during Secret Empire. Rage totally vanished from the narrative once the event started, and only returned to active duty in Venomized. We don't know exactly when he recovered.

Ewing's views on Dwayne's skateboard:

Thing I might be alone on: If you take away the skateboard, or make it not an actual skateboard, Night Thrasher isn't Night Thrasher.
He changes from the man who uses unorthodox methods and doesn't care what you think about that to a man who's worried about being made fun of.
Bringing back the old, killing the young: that's the Marvel way
Under other circumstances, I'd agree.
But Thrash isn't Rocket Racer. He rarely used the board when he it was part of his armor's design, and it barely played a part of his character or arsenal.
Characters change over time, costumes and abilities evolve over time. Frankly, I'd rather have his armor back than the skateboard he barely ever used.
Look who Frank recruited as backup!

I would agree - the skateboard never seemed to me to be an intrinsic part of the character like the Silver Surfer. (or Silhouette's crutches) He didn't really seem to embody "skate boarder" to me - he was Marvel's young Batman more than anything else and Dwayne had many weapons at his disposal.
