To those arguing Wolverine's not being homophobic himself but is instead using the Punisher's homophobia to tease him, imagine the Punisher were racist instead and Wolverine was teasing him for looking at magazines of black women. Still seem OK?

Hmm...that's tough cuz it could be received any number of ways depending on how the "joke" was done. It might come off as tasteless by some, or it might be seen as Logan calling out Frank on his racism and hypocrisy.

in real life there are people who will say racist things and still seek sexual relationships/favors from the people they criticize. Just as there's folks who will speak against homosexuality then later get caught doing meth with same sex escorts. On the other hand, the comic in question isn't really trying to deal with any larger social issues, it's just a slugfest.

because the right has attempted to re-define homophobia as ONLY to mean "scared of gays". . which is not what it means. But as you can see here, some do buy into that lie the right-wing, Conservatives spout.

That's why we are seeing so many vile things focusing on the "gay agenda" (hint -- that does NOT exist). . and being incredibly homophobic.
It's not exactly the same thing, but I'm reminded of the time Ann Coulter was criticized for calling John Edwards f****t, and said she wasn't being homophobic because she used the word in a "correct" way as a "school yard taunt."

EDIT: I'm mexican so I had no idea who she was, I've just googled her and holy sh**! Also, as a mexican, the only thing I have to say about machismo is that it must be destroyed.

Who in the world needs some crappy joke or comic bit which would alienate or discriminate people?
Well, there goes 90% of all humor in the world.

90% if you look at the comment in the broadest possible terms. I read it as "we don't need humor designed to ridicule and undermine groups of people based on their inherent traits".

Well, it actually started with a behind the scenes controversy regarding the show Grey's Anatomy. Isiah Washington was accused of calling co-star TR Knight (who is gay) a slur for being late to rehersal. In the middle of this Isiah appears on live TV and says, "I never called TR a f*gg*t!" Mind you, this wasn't an interview about the situation, it was a photo-op for the cast and he just blurted it out from nowhere. This of course caused more of an uproar. Isiah goes to rehab and is eventually fired from the show.

So now right when Isiah's being condemned, Ann Coulter is at some Republican fund raising event and says something like, "I was going to talk about John Edwards but I guess when you say f*gg*t, you have to go to rehab." When people got angry, Ann's reply was that the f-word has nothing to do with gay people, it's a school yard taunt and that she used the word correctly.

Keep in mind though, that this is the same woman who said that Christians are perfected Jews.

    It's both.

But that still makes it homophobic.

This thread has drifted massively from the original topic -- twice -- and a number of you are acting really quite rude. So we're locking this thread, but keeping it here for reference. Watch how you treat your fellow community members because more than one of you in this thread is on the edge of being banned for 30 days. Act respectfully, don't attempt to assume their motivations and don't be rude.
