Hawkgirl became Hawkwoman in 1981. And they had to write a story about Barbara not switching to Batwoman somewhere the in 1977-1979 timeframe. If she'd been introduced a decade earlier, sure, everyone was doing it, but she was introduced in 1976 - did things change that much in just a few years (I was not yet born)? After that, maybe inertia kept the name? I'm honestly not sure how old she was by time the '90s rolled around (don't know if any retcons changed age).

Anyway, I do prefer Supergirl introduced as a 15 year old as she originally was. But she needs to age at the same rate as everyone else. And if she's Dick age, should make it to at least her mid-to-late 20s (unless killed off). That means growing past the youth stage and having a real, grownup life (something DC doesn't seem to support for certain characters, while others are allowed it). She should have left the name Supergirl behind her by then. It's fine to choose at 15 and it's fine for inertia to keep it a while, but by 22/23, it needs to be gone, IMO.
It's unfortunate that DC introduced another character named Superwoman (probably to maintain copyrights). Otherwise Supergirl could have grown into Superwoman just as Superboy grew into Superman.

For one, it sort of demotes reporting from being a passion that Clark and Lois share to just a convenient thing you do when you wear an S on your chest.

I like the idea of her civilian identity being specifically about self discovery rather than just another side of the "never ending battle." Grant they don't have to be mutually exclusive, but you just don't see Superman family doing this sort of stuff these days because perceptions are so ridged when it comes to them.

I'll have to check some of this stuff out now.
A revival of this was one of the last things I tried pitching Berganza on.

I wanted to bring back the lost aspects of characters through an Infinity Inc. team.

My Supergirl was the cousin of President Superman of Earth-23, a socially conscious theater major at Stanhope University. Super-artsy. Her best friend is stage technician Digger Malverne.

The rest of the cast was made up of revamps of alternate Superboys and Supergirls from different eras, revamped to be pinned to different Morrisonian concepts.

Mars Boy, Scion of the Ultrasphinx! Interstellar Egyptian jock.

Kid Darkstar, Part-Time Associate of the Controllers and full time punk rocker.

Hourlass, the Goth Time Priestess Glorith, of the Cult of Metron.

Matrix, Qabbalistic Fire Angel, flesh of protoplasm! The head cheerleader of Heaven.

Why do you like her the same age as Batgirl? Several seem to, even though originally she was younger than Barbara (who, I admit, has now been de-aged relative to the other younger heroes, which I dislike).

I never thought of her as successor the the title (don't want anyone to inherit it, but DC's not listening to me), though I could understand how she'd be #1 for the job, being the first spin-off/sidekick. Don't even know how to factor in Jon as 17 and how that all works.

Hmmm... no romance stories? Interesting… this suggests a major change in the status quo.... I could di Kara Zor-El as a house wife though.

I genuinely liked seeing the stories with Mary Jane as Spiderman's wife. So Seeing Supergirl and Brainiac raising a kid together could be a nice read.

    Yes, I mean her:

The TV version of Supergirl does like to bake. Pot pies, Danishes, pancakes, heating turkey. So the kid would be well fed.

Huh? I thought anyone called Superwoman was an AU character (such as Earth-3 Lois), except for Rebirth era Lana?

I'd be ok with her as a teenager that grows up into a young adult.

    What's AU stand for?

When DC introduced the new Superwoman (Kristin Wells), in 1981, it was expressly stated that this was done to retain the trademark on the name. DC through lack of inattention lost its grip on the "Super" trademark. In the 1940s, other publishers took Super Duck, Super Cat, Super Mouse, Super Pup, Supersnipe--there was even Roy the Super Boy! And it never let up after that as every company on the planet exploited the Super name for its own benefit, without paying a dime to DC. To their everlasting shame, DC even has to share the trademark on "Super-Hero" with their main competitor, Marvel Comics.

In the 1970s, porn producers had a field day exploiting Super- and Bat- names and I believe the rush to get Superwoman as a clear trademark was to prevent an adult entertainment company from using the brand. There was many a Superwoman that the Superman comics featured, beginning in the 1940s, but they never backed a clear winner, meaning they had abandoned any trademark claims on the name. So it was just sitting there for anyone to exploit.

This is why DC always has to have a Robin, a Batgirl, a Batwoman, a Supergirl, a Superboy and a Superwoman. They can kill off the characters all they want, but they have to make sure to always have those names in publication so they don't lose the trademark. If you don't use it, you lose it.

I want a Supergirl who starts out as a teenage hero and sidekick to Superman and is allowed to grow up like Nightwing was. I do want her in the original Titans generation. I always thought it was a shame that the writers in the past decade and a half haven't focused on having the Superfamily be closer. I hate that Superman hasn't been as involved in her life. It never made any sense to me.

I think Pre-Flashpoint Kara was PERFECT, her age, her development trough the Amazon training etc.

The biggest issue to me was her not aging at the same rate as her peers, but that's not really about her journey, though. Her starting young and growing up worked really well. Though I do think a non "girl" non "super" name in adulthood, as Nightwing did would have been great.
