It's also the best music I can sing to via Karaoke, FWIW.
Then you are in the right place.

1950 saw one of the very first recordings featuring the vocals of the man, the legend, the Sam Cooke.

Default Dale Hawkins - Susie Q

I wanted to post earlier, but all the songs I though would fit here were actually recorded in the 60s. Blurry times for me, or should I say, way before my times. Also many of the artists that nurture the good old sound of R'N'R, I listen to, are from the 80s (when the style saw its revival). I'm not sure if that's what the OP meant, so I kept researching my memory, for something more suitable. Funny thing is, that when I think of the 50s music, the first thing I associate it with is what my parents listened to. However, they were from Europe and while R'N'R certainly made its stamp on the music scene, other styles were more dominant, most notably the... Schlager music. (Hey! here is an idea for a new thread.) While my parents weren't into music I listened to, I did like 90% of what they enjoyed. Hence my confusion.

    But here is one:

Although Chubby Checker made it the most popular a year later. I really love this version.

    Johnnie Ray - Cry

I remember first hearing this song on my fathers record. It was called "50's Legends" or something. I never hear it on Golden Oldies stations, though. Wonder why.
