What does it take to be an X-Man?
Being the articially created son of Scott and Jean!
You’re an X-Man if you make it from one side of the Danger Room to the other - particularly if your eyes are closed.
1) be prepared to marry a clone (if Sinister is interested in your bloodline)
2). Be a Mutant that can pass itself as human when powers aren’t being used
3) get from one side of the Danger Room to another
4). Know not to ruin Storm’s garden, mess with any of Wolverine’s kids, (Kitty, Jubilee, Armor, X-23)
5). Fight giant killer robots who want you dead
6). Occasionally fight teammates who either get replaced with Cosmic Beings or go crazy/ inverted
7). Sometimes fight Apocalypse
8). Occasionally get involved in larger crossovers with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy
9) occasionally spend months in a Alternate Universe created by the alternate reality “son”f the sometimes team leader and the redhead most of the older team members like, particularly the Team Leader and Wolverine
10). Occasionally meet younger Time Displaced selfs through time travel
11). Sometimes Team Up/ fight Alpha Flight
12). Play football/ baseball
13). Team with the Starjammers, sometimes the Imperial Guard (though usually fight the Imperial Guard)
That seems to be the criteria

The definition of X-Men is those mutants who were trained by Prof Xavier. That's where the X comes in, it is from 'X'avier.
The two criteria to become an X-Man is
1. Mutant.
2. Recruited and trained by Xavier at least once in the past.
Nowadays, most writers have forgotten the original meaning and recruit people like Juggernaut who isn't a mutant nor trained by Prof X.
Those mutants who were recruited and trained from Magneto became the Brotherhood of evil mutants or Acolytes.
Similarly, those mutants trained by Hellfire Club were called Hellions.
Those mutants first recruited and trained by Cable are called X-Force.
Those mutants trained by Callisto are called Morlocks. i.e. Caliban is a Morlock and not X-Man.

To be willing to die for others just as much as you would for yourself. Ultimately no matter what side they fall in x-men in my opinion have always been willing to pay the sacrifice when the ultimate moment calls. They will live their life, they will struggle for equality and right or wrong when the time comes to sacrifice it all the x-men stand up. apoc did in X of Swords, magneto has before, Xavier, Mystique. Villain or hero or baseline human.
Don't let anyone else hold the candle that lights the way to your future because only you can sustain the flame.
