Although technically we've already had an X-wing focused series (The Poe Dameron comics) this one seems like it'll harken closer to the OT, and sort of be Disney's analog to Lucasfilm's 90s-2000's Rogue Squadron comics/novels/video games, which revealed that the X-wing/Snowspeeder squadron that Luke commanded in ESB continued to operate after ROTJ, led by Wedge Antilles-and helped participate in many notable battles, such as the capture of Coruscant.

Disney-wise things are a bit different; of course a similar designation was used for the Rogue One group, and the comics from Marvel did link this to the callsign, as Luke was inspired by hearing of Jyn's acts in the ruins of Jedha and decided to use it during a critical escape from the Empire (The Hope Dies arc). However beyond that and ESB, Rogue Squadron seems to play no real further role; Wedge appears in the "Aftermath" novels, but he leads Phantom Squadron instead.

So I'm wondering if this'll sort of serve a similar purpose to the old Rogue Squadron stuff, although this squadron is actually composed of different Starfighters (Hence the title "Alphabet Squadron"). They also, like Rogue Squadron, have an Imperial analog-Shadow Wing (In the comics and some of the novels, we're introduced to the 181st, an ace TIE fighter unit commanded by future Solo in-law Baron Fel) which will be getting it's own comic series, TIE fighter.
