Japan's Greatest Hero: Shiro Yoshida aka SUNFIRE! Appreciation 2019

    SUNFIRE

Sunfire is Japan's premier superhero; a mutant who converts solar radiation into plasma.

    Origin

Shiro Yoshida grew up with a huge resentment against the United States.
His mother was exposed to the radiation of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima and she died during his birth.
His dad, a member of the Japanese Clan Yashida, became a diplomat to the United Nations and Shiro was pretty much raised by his uncle.

Shiro's uncle Tomo took him to a site in Hiroshima, and got him to touch the ground.

There, the radioactive soil somehow triggered his mutation.
Shiro trained for months before he was able to control his flame fully. His uncle Tomo was purely anti-America.
He instilled his hatred upon Shiro and is responsible for giving him his costume and codename of Sunfire.

    Creation
Sunfire was created by Roy Thomas and Don Heck in 1970

and first appeared in The (Uncanny) X-Men #64.

If the MCU Sunfire shows up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can the MCU Firestar be far behind?

    Fingers crossed!

I wish he would get use more in the X-verse.

I love to see him on a team with Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee, Sage, Gambit and Rogue
I've seen your end and it starts with you challenging me.

    Uncanny X-Men #118 Feb 1979
"The Submergence of Japan" Part 1 of 2. Guest-starring Sunfire and Misty Knight.
The X-Men arrive in Japan aboard the ship Jinguchi Maru, where they find that
the city Agarashima is ablaze by a great firestorm caused by an unnatural earthquake.
Coming to the mainland, Wolverine reads a local newspaper to learn about the series of strange and unnatural attacks.
With a clear disaster on their hands, Scott suggests that they find their old ally, Sunfire
and see what they can do to help while at the same time contacting Professor X and letting him know that they are alive.
This would seem to be almost too late, as at that very moment, the Professor is aboard
a Shi'ar ship back to Lilandra's world, having decided to leave Earth because he would believe the X-Men to be dead.

While in Japan, the X-Men sneak into the Yashida estate and are surrounded by soldiers and Sunfire who orders them to surrender.

The tense confrontation is halted when Misty Knight shows up and tells Sunfire that the Prime Minister wants to get the X-Men's help.
With Cyclops before the Prime Minister, Sunfire demands in Japanese that the Prime Minister allow him to deal with the crisis alone
and not allow the American detectives Misty Knight and Colleen Wing or the X-Men interfere.
Despite his angry demands, the Prime Minister does not change his decision much to the chagrin of Sunfire.

Not understanding the conversation, Cyclops decides to find a phone so that he can call and tell the Professor that they're still alive
and tell him that Jean and Hank are dead. As he walks away, Colleen thinks about how attractive Cyclops is.
When Misty is done calling in on her boyfriend Iron Fist, who can't come to help because he's on a case with Power Man,
Cyclops calls the mansion to find that the phone has been disconnected and wonders what could have happened to the Professor.
When Cyclops tells Banshee that they need to check back on the mansion, he's told that Colleen is looking for him.

Elsewhere in the house, Wolverine comes across young Mariko Yashida.
Although the gentle woman is at first frightened by Wolverine's sudden interruption of her meditation
she is eased by the fact he is able to speak fluent Japanese and knows much about their culture.
The two begin to bond when suddenly the palace is struck by another seeming earthquake.
In reality, the house is being attacked by an army of men dressed in Mandroid armor.
While the Mandroids manage to knock out Sunfire, the X-Men take them
out with relative ease, smashing their armor and preventing their escape.

In the aftermath of the battle, a hologram of the Mandroid's leader appears,

he introduces himself as Moses Magnum and demand that the government of Japan name him the
ruler of the country in the next 24 hours or he will use his Magnum Force to sink the island of Japan.

    Uncanny X-Men #119 Mar 1979
"Twas the Night Before Christmas..." Part 2 of 2. Guest-starring Sunfire and Misty Knight.
The Kurii islands off the coast of Japan: with Nightcrawler in tow, Storm flies to an especially remote island.
When they are in close enough proximity, Nightcrawler teleports to a secret base upon it.
After subduing a guard, he enters the base. While penetrating within, he reflects back on the start of the mission.

In a flashback, he recalls how Moses Magnum issued an ultimatum to the government of Japan:
Turn the country over to him, or he will use his magnum force to sink the entire country.
With the 24-hour deadline quickly approaching, the Prime Minister of Japan has asked the visiting X-Men
to help stop him from destroying the country. After getting a briefing on the likelihood of Moses Magnum’s ability to actually do it,
the X-Men and Sunfire set out to oppose him. The whereabouts of his secret base having been rooted out by Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.

The group has split into two teams to try and stop Magnum's operation that is located within the Kuril Islands.
While Storm and Banshee have approached from the air with Nightcrawler teleporting into the base solo,
Cyclops leads Colossus, Wolverine and Sunfire in burrowing their way underground to the island.
Meanwhile, all parties remain in radio contact with Misty and Colleen.

Storm relates to Banshee a message from Misty that they are to begin the assault.
Banshee uses his sonic scream to disrupt the base’s scanners. This prompts the island’s defense soldiers
to rush outside where Storm attacks them, leaving the base free for Nightcrawler to move around in.
Nightcrawler’s specific mission is to operate a homing beacon in order to guide Cyclops’ team to the correct point at which to tunnel their way in.
Having found a decent spot, he activates his homing beacon but reacts to a noise he hears elsewhere in the chamber.

Cyclops and Sunfire punch a hole through the floor. But upon entering it, Colossus is ambushed by Magnum who surprises them

with his newly acquired super-human strength. Magnum punches Colossus with enough force to send him rocketing out of the base.
Colossus barely manages to anchor himself before plunging off the island.
After saving himself, he laments just how ineffectual he feels he’s been in battles lately.

Back inside, Cyclops, Wolverine and Sunfire rush Moses Magnum.
The villain takes out Wolverine with a single punch. Cyclops orders Sunfire to get backup from Storm and Banshee.

While Cyclops is alone against him, Magnum introduces two new soup-up Mandroids and sets them on Cyclops.
Just then, Colossus returns and easily pummels the two Mandroids by himself.

Furious, Magnum runs from the room, promising to carry out his threat after all.
Banshee attempts to follow, but a door slams shut between them.
Acting on a hunch, Banshee tells Cyclops to get everyone clear from the island and flies off.

While Moses concentrates his newfound energy abilities, Banshee creates a solid wall of sonic screams across the island, exerting his
mutant ability to its fullest extent. The rest of the team are deafened by Banshee’s assault, but he is successful as the entire island explodes.

A day later, Misty and Colleen are aboard a small prop plane scanning the island’s surroundings for survivors. They spot Sunfire in the air,

who leads them to a small rocky outpost where the X-Men are stranded, including a gravely injured Banshee.

Ten days later, a cab drops Banshee off at the Yashida estate. Banshee ponders to himself that for the days immediately following the mission,
he apparently lay comatose in the hospital and his teammates remained vigilantly by his side. Yet now on the day of his release, none of them
came to the hospital. He enters the estate to find that they’ve arranged a surprise party for him and he realizes that it is Christmas Day.

Storm notices Wolverine sneaking out of the party to spend some quiet time with Mariko.
Ororo thinks to herself how much gentler Wolverine seems in the young woman’s presence, something she appreciates.
Ororo gives kurt a peck on the cheek for Christmas and then commiserates with Peter, who laments being away from his family on Christmas.

In Scotland, Jean arrives in Edinburgh and meets up with Moira, Alex (Havok), Lorna (Polaris) and Jamie Madrox (Multiple Man).
Their plan is to celebrate Christmas together before traveling to Muir Island.

At that same time, On Muir Island, the disgruntled Angus MacWhirter
who rented the X-Men a boat which was destroyed back in issue #104 has broken into Moira’s facilities.
He plans to rig charges and destroy the complex. As he skulks around, he passes by a door ID-ed as the holding cell for Mutant X.
Alone in the corridors, Angus encounters a being that refers to him as “human” before attacking...and killing him.

    Yeah, More Sunfire please Marvel,

I use to much prefer his AOA look, but after UA, I prefer his classic look more now. His AoA could be still used at times of great need for him though.

On the other hand, I'd be very interested in a reunion between former Horsemen of Apocalypse. A team with Sunfire, Gambit, Polaris & Archangel would be totally awesome.

I love that second look for him with the short hair. He's in dire need of a costume refresh. But also he needs to be part of a regular cast....

I like 'em both, for different reasons. The second's more modern (traditional superhero) looking, for sure, and more practical as a result. And my God, YES, THIS!... Like yesterday...

    Uncanny X-Men #181 May 1984
    "Tokyo Story!"
Story follows the events of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #12...

Professor X, Wolverine, Colossus, Rogue, Storm and Lockheed are all teleported
back to Earth following their ordeal on Battleworld with the Beyonder.
Along with them was a small dragon companion that had befriended Lockheed.
Upon their arrival, the dragon would grow to a massive size and fly off, while the X-Men would fall to the ground.
Learning that they have been teleported to Japan, they also learn of Lockheed's friend becoming a massive creature.
Learning that they have been gone for over a week, the Professor sends Rogue to America to check on the fate of Doug Ramsey and Kitty Pryde,
as well as make sure that the New Mutants and Cyclops are okay while they deal with the threat of the dragon they brought back with them.

As the dragon begins wrecking Tokyo, the Japanese mobilizes their military to deal with the threat.

While reports are coming in Mariko Yoshida and her cousin Sunfire learn
that the X-Men, and Wolverine, are in Japan as well to combat the creature.
The X-Men catch up with the monster and as Storm keeps it occupied, the others rescue any civilians that get in the way of danger.
Soon, Sunfire and the military arrive to deal with the monster.

However, as they battle the creature the X-Men note that their weapons have little effect on them.

Meanwhile, at the Beachcomber Hotel in Tahiti, Cyclops appears before a grief stricken Madelyne.
She is upset that he vanished out of her arms and was missing for a whole week while on their honeymoon.
However, despite this, Scott manages to calm her down and the newly weds make up.

As the battle rages on in Japan, Storm unleashes her full fury on the creature.
While down below, some wreckage lands on the Professor's legs making him panic about the potential of losing his ability to walk.
He is rescued by Colossus, while Wolverine goes off looking for others. He comes across a dying woman and her daughter Amiko.
The woman asks Wolverine to look after her, and Logan vows to keep care of the young orphaned girl.

Meanwhile, Sunfire and Storm are knocked out by the dragon and as the creature is about to kill them, Lockheed confronts it.
Blowing fire in it's face wounds the giant dragon emotionally and it flies away with Lockheed following behind, yelling at it.
Suddenly, the creature kills itself in a massive energy burst.
In the aftermath of the battle, the X-Men realize that the creature was attempting to build a nest for itself
and Lockheed to live in together and that when Lockheed rejected the creature it committed suicide.

While in Washington D.C., Senator Robert Kelly attempts to have
legislation passed for his new Mutant Control Act supported by his colleagues.
Meeting with Senator Phillip, Kelly pressures him to support the bill.
Phillip refuses, believing that this is tantamount to legalizing slavery
and vows to do everything in his power to prevent the bill from coming into law.
He tells his colleague that he hopes that trying to motion this bill will not cause irreversible damage.

    NOTE: first appearance of Amiko.
