JSA 1999 Appreciation Thread

Not sure if there was a huge following on here of this book that debuted in 1999, but it was a favorite of mine. My favorite issues are those early ones (Secret Origins #1; #1-15) where the group consisted of Sentinel, Flash, Hippolyta, Wildcat, Black Canary, Starman (Jack), Hourman (the android), Sand, Atom Smasher, Dr. Fate (Hector), Hawkgirl (Kendra), and Star Spangled Kid (Courtney).

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I really liked the direction of James Robinson and David Goyer early on. Geoff Johns came aboard as a co-writer some time around issue #6 or 7 and I liked some of the early work of Goyer and Johns. As the series went on, it seemed that Johns took more control of the book and I didn't care for the new direction. But those early issues were some of the best stories I've read in awhile.

I also loved the art of Stephen Sadowski and Michael Bair.

This was my first Justice Society book. Previously, I really only had a passing awareness of them via the short-lived Mike Parobeck series, and then... "Zero Hour".

I'd say my favorite material from the 1999 series was the first two years, through "The Return of Hawkman". There was a lot of good material after, but I didn't really *love* it again until the the title change to Justice Society of America, and Johns & Eaglesham were on it.

Once those two left, the less said the better...

As a fan of the Justice Society of America since the 1970s, I absolutely loved this run of the group. Also worth pointing out - it's something that doesn't get brought up as much as it should in my opinion - is how much attention to detail early on that Goyer and Robinson gave these often abused and neglected characters. For instance, the opening of the very first issue is very much a callback to the opening of Roy Thomas' 1986 Last Days of the Justice Society one-shot. It's neat little things like this that do not detract from a story by making it too bogged down with continuity, yet the homages are there for the longtime fans and can be enjoyed on another level without taking away from the story itself.

This series was far from my first contact with the JSA. I've been a fan ever since those old team-ups with the Justice League of America, and the short run on Adventure Comics was the first series of the team that I really followed and collected (back then, here in Brazil, it was pratically impossible to get anything that wasn't Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and occasionally Avengers and X-Men. But those Dollar books, such as World's Finest and Adventure Comics, were also relatively easy to come by). Eventually, I got to have the whole 70's All-Star run, All-Star Squadron is still one of my favorite books ever, the 90's Kaminski and Parobeck series, and so on. But this series certainly was a high point on the JSA's publication history, and I sure enjoyed it a lot.

I liked the "newer" villains, such as Mordu, Eclipso and Extant, but I have to say my favorite was a classic. The Ultra-Humanite in Stealing Thunder.

I adored the 92 Justice Society of America series by Len Stazewski, and James Robinson's The Golden Age, but outside of that I grew up in the 90s only loosely associating some of the older heroes with the JSA "team" concept -- I was reading about Ted Knight in Starman, Wesley Dodds in Sandman Mystery Theatre, Jay Garrick in Flash, Alan Scott when he appeared in Green Lantern (and, you know, that whole Zero Hour thing), but I didn't really have a great feel for these heroes as a group. But I was going to follow Robinson and Jack Knight over to JSA regardless, and I ended up loving the book so much I stayed on for the entire run, loooooong after Robinson and Starman left.

The JSA Returns! was a perfect launching point (IMO), I think both bookends and each of the one-shots were really well done. The entirety of the series is pretty strong -- the relaunch in 2006 or 2007 had a solid first two years with "Thy Kingdom Come", and I thought Bill Willingham's (?) follow-up arc was ok, but it really tailed off after that. But the 99 series was really strong from start to finish.
