It's a remake, other than some key moments and similar character names it is a completely different story and the characters are written nothing like the original.

As someone who was a huge fan of the original I must say I'm enjoying the show. I do miss William Sadler as Jim Balenti though

Technically, it's based on the original book series not the original series. That way Roswell, New Mexico don't have to pay royalties to the producers of Roswell, the previous series.

I'm left to wonder how close the two shows will end up being in the end, storyline wise, like in the new one will the first season end with Max being captured by the alien hunters and such...

Anyway though I still wish that the old version had gotten a better ending and/or lasted longer, still has enough material from it to do a reboot that would be different enough from the one that we have now(maybe with the kids of the original group returning to Roswell) though I highly doubt that they'd do it while this one is airing...
