    Default Return to Comics

    Greetings All,
I'm returning to this great pastime called comic books after a 5 year plus sabbatical. I have always categorized myself as a die hard Marvelite. However I am tired of their constant restarts/reboots and my perceived negative influence by Disney & corporate bigwigs.

I'm jumping all in with DC. I am looking at Green Lantern, Aquaman, Shazam! & Hawkman. Any other suggestions for quality titles to pick up?

    THANKS!!!

I'll make some publicity for mini-series and new characters whom I feel deserve a lot of love :

-Batman and the Signal (3 issues)
-Electric Warriors (6 issues when it'll be over)
    -New Superman (24 issues)
    -The Silencer (still going)
    -The Terrifics (still going)

If you search some particular stories for Aquaman, the New 52 series and Aquaman and the Others are excellent.

Your particular combination of being both a returning fan and someone who isn't familiar with DC in the first place would seem to indicate that it's probably best to start with titles that have just recently been launched, so that you're not too far behind the curve.

In addition to the ones you mentioned, maybe try the Bendis titles as he's been with DC less than a year, so back issues or trades should be easy to find. He writes Superman and Action Comics as well as his own DC Universe imprint, Wonder Comics, which has Young Justice (which has gotten rave reviews), and others.

I would say try Justice League as that has also gotten good reviews, but it's very concept-y and spins out of the Dark Knights: Metal event. If you're willing to dive in to that, it might be a good way to sample lots of DC characters and DC concepts all at once. There are two other JL titles, JL Dark and JL Odyssey that touch upon other aspects of the DC Universe.

If you are looking for a company that don't do restarts or reboots and the big wigs keep there distance
than sorry, but you came to the wrong place
D C and Marvel have two things in common
1- they both are owned by big companies that want to squeeze out maximum sales and profits each month
2- There will always be a few gems in each round of books

The Green Lantern by Morrison & Sharp is highly recommended. I would also recommend the new Bendis Superman titles, particularly Action Comics. It's some of the best stuff I've seen from him in years. Leaving Marvel really re-energized him. Johna & Eaglesham's Shazam is also great, although I would suggest reading the New 52 Shazam TPB first.

What was some of your favorite stuff at Marvel? That would help us make more appropriate recommendations based upon your tastes.

Alpha Flight, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Black Panther, Werewolf by Night and Hulk to name a few.

Which incarnations of these guys? John Byrne's original Alpha Flight or the later incarnations? Which Moon Knight? The original version or the more recent Multiple Personality Disorder version? McGregor's Black Panther or Priest's Black Panther? Which Hulk? PAD's? I'm not familiar enough with Werewolf by Night to be helpful there, though. DC has a few good monster-y characters, but they are mostly in team books at the moment. Swamp Thing and Man-Bat, for instance, are currently members of Justice League Dark, along with Detective Chimp (who is awesome).

If you like Daredevil in any of his various incarnations since Frank Miller, then Batman is certainly up your alley. Tom King's Batman is pretty good, although I know some readers aren't big fans of his Alan Moore/Frank Miller/Looney Toons style. I enjoy it a lot, but it took me (and King) a few storyarcs to click with the character. The most recent issue is a silent story that's one long chase scene with some absolutely gorgeous art, which King's Batman has been crazy full of.
