Default What would be Superman's own personal favorite movie/show about himself?

    Imagine this:

Mr. Myxlpltk sends present-day comics Superman (regular mainstream continuity) into OUR world, on which he's stuck and from which he cannot leave to return to his own world until he fulfills the following conditions:

    1. He's given nearly all well-known cinematic, animated, and TV live action versions of himself to watch over a period of roughly one month: his viewing will include all the old Kirk Alyn serials of the 1940s, select episodes of George Reeves' ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN TV series, the Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN movies, various animated depictions spanning the Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s to the current DC animated features, select episodes of the 1990s LOIS AND CLARK series with Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain, select episodes of SMALLVILLE, the DCEU movies featuring Henry Cavill's Superman, etc. Pretty much, a sample of everything he's been in on film and television for the past 80 years.

    2. He is to write a detailed review of what he liked and didn't like in each portrayal, and which ones his favorites are, and which he didn't care for.

What reviews do you expect Superman to give the various media portrayals of him over the years?

I feel like while Clark isn't someone who needs light fare, it's either that or a healthy shade of "black or white" morality to escape. Remember that most of the people he had to regulate tend to be pretty scummy and that he also helps with a lot of traumatic incidents. Some old fashioned heroics, Kill a Mockingbird, renaissance types... pulp, will do it for him. So somewhere around what we tend to with what people call classic.

Kirk Allyn seems to fit the bill and being a kind of pioneer is very admirable, but I think Clark can still chuckle at the old school weirdness. Where Reeves is a model, and Reeve is a brother/peer appreciation.

The Fleischer films work because they're all of the above and so easily digestible. Clark has a moment to sit down and watch for once. Superman is good and not grey, and it's very thrilling even at such a low power level. A quick nostalgic shot to wash down the day, works alternating with Lois and Clark. Between Adventures and that show is a cheesy but sweet spot.

And, not just imposing with my own impressions, I have to say that by the same token something muddy wouldn't work. I think he's right along with Waid and others getting put off by arguably bleak, less aspirational fare. Stuff that hits close to home in maybe the form of a critique. He'd prefer to relate to Magnificent Seven or Thor Ragnarok over his own Man of Steel, though he'd find Cavill and Adams sincerely charming.

He would absolutely LOVE the Fleischer cartoons! I have no doubt about that in my mind. Ditto the Adventures of Superman show. And the Donner movies. Or at least the first one. He'd probably be middle of the road on things like Smallville and L&C. He'd probably respect TAS. I think he'd like Supergirl just because he would think it's great his cousin got her own show. He'd HATE MOS. The killing of Zod. The destruction porn. None of that is his style. That's why I don't have a high opinion of those movies and I doubt he would too. I've actually kind of wanted to do a story where Superman goes into the "real" world and sees all the different depictions of himself. I would also love to see Batman do the same. Being so serious all the time.

Clark has appeared as Superman in at least two movies. I know he's not vain, but I imagine that he takes some pride in his film career and he's probably a popular guest on the convention circuit. Then there's the films and TV shows of Gregory Reed, probably the greatest actor to play Superman and a personal friend of the Man of Steel.

I suspect Superman would really like everything I like from his shows and movies..

He would be impressed with the action, drama and heart in Death of Superman animated movie. BvS would make him feel let down and miss-represented. He would love the story, drama and action in Man of Steel but think Superman would find a way to save Pa Kent. He would find the Fleischer cartoon pure joy. He would definitely feel very let down by the CW Superman version. He would love Chris Reeve in the first movie and be blown away by the score by Williams. He'd definitely like most of the animated shows and movies like Superfriends and JL.

Probably be more than a little put off by how obsessed we are with his death.

Fleischer cartoons would probably be his favorite. He'd blush at how romantic and warm Superman: The Movie is. He'd really dig the 90s cartoon for building on the Fleischer stuff he liked so much. Lois and Clark may tie with Superman: The Movie for his second favorite because it's good fun and romance with his wife. Kirk Alyn and George Reeves shows would likely be on the list for being straightforward and fun. He probably wouldn't enjoy MOS all that much because he's dedicated his whole life to making sure nothing like the climax of that movie ever actually happen. He'd "get it", he's not a prude or a child, but it would be the same way he'd get the fascination with his death, but since he's lived both in some form he wouldn't get much enjoyment out of it.

I don't understand why some fans are so put off by the destruction in Man of Steel. I mean, I see it happening lots in animation, comics and other superhero movies, shows and nobody complains... Destruction and collateral damage is part of the genre, Superman or not. I think he would appreciate the realism in Man of Steel.

Speaking just for myself? I'm not put off by the destruction at all. I'm disappointed by it. I think it could've been more impactful and better applied in the film it was started in. More Miracle Man vs Kid Miracle Man and less Transformers The Movie. I personally thought it was a novel idea to explore a Superman level fight as two adults walking through a city made of Legos. I would've even appreciated seeing smaller, more quite moments of that sort of thing building towards the climax.

That said, it should be treated as a brush stroke rather than laying base coat with a roller because the fact of the matter is, it wasn't animation. And the closer true to life something is, the more uncomfortable most people get when stuff happens on screen that would make them uncomfortable in real life.

That's just how people work. We are sympathetic the more true to life a thing is. That's why most cartoon destruction doesn't bother us/we don't even clock it as happening. So, when you use that level of destruction in live action you have to be mindful of things like tone, color, and framing to get across whatever feeling you want. MOS sort of goes from impactful to desensitizing all in the same hour. I'd have like to see more anticipation built for it, and then have it be more focused and all around quicker. Use the brush for its intended reason.

Never in a million years, when I first saw the movie, did I imagine there would be so much controversy over the end. I mean maybe the neck break but I think the direction was blatant enough that Superman would endure criticisms about his actions.

But from the view of someone watching it as their own autobiography, I would imagine it's quite unflattering. Meeting the on screen Supermen would be a different thing though. I think he'd congratulate Cav El for his bravery and try to find some non judgmental way to take him through an operation seminar, since it's one guy with maybe 10 years and another who just finished his first week or so.

He'd probably be embarrassed to watch so much about himself. But he'd probably enjoy everything and feel pretty happy about it all. He'd probably ask if he could get to watch all his friends movies as well, and then later drop some Adam West and Linda Carter quotes around Bats and Wondie for days and days.

I am not put off by the amount of destruction, but I was bored during parts of the final act because it felt like I was watching someone play a video game. If anything bothered me, it's mostly that it was bleak (not bad in itself), but then they would throw in inappropriate lighthearted scenes and not address the fact that half the city was smashed and thousands of people died. I guess the word I'm looking for, besides "boring," is "callous."

That said, the complaints that Superman was responsible for the destruction rings so hollow to me. I mean, there was literally a machine that was destroying the city that was causing most of the damage, and obviously Superman and the army were trying to stop it.

I think Superman would like the DC Lego movies, even though it's a caricature of Superman.

I think he'd most like Lois and Clark because the series gives so much time to the people he loves the most in life.

In which books can we read about this, Jim? Sounds fascinating.

Provided that Myxlpltk returns Superman to his own world at the precise moment that he was taken away from it (meaning he didn't lose any time and failed to save any lives as a result), I think Superman would actually be grateful to Myx for this interesting and enjoyable experience.
