I know since X-Factor he's been portrayed as a jerk, but he's also been portrayed as a conservative jerk, and an old one, so the idea that there's a younger than Bobby child abandoned somewhere is actually quite a leap.

Not really. He's a conservative jerk who could have incredibly easily had an affair and as a result had a child as a result of that. It's possible that he doesn't know about the kid, but the fact is that given the type of person that Bobby's dad is it wouldn't at all be a stretch to say that another kid with William Drake's DNA could exist out there. Hell, all things considered Bobby isn't close with his parents so it's possible that if William had another child they would choose not to associate also.

What is it abut being conservative that stops him from having had an affair? Last I checked, conservatives are just as capable of infidelity as anyone else.

It doesn't even have to be an affair. Lightwave could be the result of a fling either parent had in their youth prior to marriage.
