    Cool DC comics Recommendations

Marvel has em. Darkhorse has em.

    So why not DC?

For all who are new to DC and want to get started or those who are jumping at random. OR even those who wanna follow a character throughout all appearances. Let's make this place the first one to go to for answers.

From all DC properties(Wildstorm, Vertigo included.)

Bring on the comics. (With permission from THe Darkknight Detective)

From all DC properties(Wildstorm, Vertigo included.)

Bring on the comics. (With permission from THe Darkknight Detective)
Here is what I recommended on another thread:

    DC has 4-5 eras :

    Gold / Silver / Bronze age - 1938-1986
    Modern Age - 1986-2011
    New52 - 2011-2016
    Rebirth - 2016-ongoing

DC is made of Several major heroes:

    Superman
    Batman
    Wonder Woman
Flash (there has been multiple ones)
    Aquaman
    Green Arrow
Green Lantern (there has been mutiple ones)

DC has also other great heroes

    Shazam! (aka Capitain Marvel)
    Martian Manhunter
    Plastic Man
    Atom
    Black Canary
    Booster Gold
    Cyborg
    Nightwing (formerly the first Robin)
    Batwoman
    Power Girl
    ...

DC has lesser known heroes that are a bit aside

    Animal Man
    Swamp Thing
    John Constantine
    Detective Chimp
    The Watchmen
    The Metal Men
    ...

DC heroes have younguer apprentice, and other young heroes

Robin (there has been a few)
    Superboy
    Aqualad
    Supergirl
    Beast Boy (aka Chagelling)
    Speedy
    Starfire
    Kid Flash
    Raven
    Wonder Girl
    Batgirl
    ...

DC has teams with these heroes:

    The Justice League
The Justice of America (aka JLA)
    The Teen Titans
    The Titans
    The Justice League Dark
The Suicide Squad (team of vilains forced to do good by the government)
    The Green Lantern Corps
    ...

    What to read ?

You can read the main DC Events

Thanks for the listing. This is less for me and more making a rec thread like other forums have.

Could you make a random monthly post of some reccs for certain characters if you have the time?

Good idea for a thread as people always seem to be looking for recommendations.

To start off (I mean, for me, but this is in addition to Gurz's excellent list) here are 5 runs/ ongoings and 5 minis/one-shot/original graphic novels from the DCU itself and from Vertigo and Wildstorm. I'm going to ignore titles that are still going on as it's usually too early to tell without seeing how it all plays out. These may or may not actually be my top 5 in each category but they are definitely not in order.

    5 ongoings, DCU:

    The Flash by Mark Waid
    Starman by James Robinson
Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea
Justice League International by Giffen and Dematteis
Gotham Central by Ed Brubaker/ Greg Rucka and Michael Lark

    Top 5 Minis/ GNs, DCU:

All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen
    New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke
Mister Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Gerads
JLA: Year One by Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn and Barry Kitson

Top 5 ongoings, Vertigo and Wildstorm

    The Sandman by Neil Gaiman
Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon
Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson
Y The Last Man by Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra
Lucifer by Mike Carey and Peter Gross

Top 5 minis/ GNs, Vertigo and Wildstorm

Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (released under DC but it was unconnected to the DCU)
Daytripper by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba
Top 10 by Alan Moore and Gene Ha
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd
Flex Mentallo by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely

Also, because they technically fit both Vertigo and the DCU, a couple of extra recommendations:

    Animal Man by Grant Morrison
Swamp Thing by Alan Moore and Steve Bissette

    * Green Lantern / Green Arrow by Denis O'Neil
    * The Animal Man by Grant Morrison
    * Lobo: Portrait of a Bastich (Lobo + Lobo's Back)

    And a few Anthologie series:

    * Jack Kirby's Fourth World
    * Wonder Woman by Georges Perez
    * Justice League International by JM DeMatteis

For key stories you should add:

    * Flash of Two Worlds (The Flash #123)
Unfortunately, I couldn't include many things I love and that I do believe to be essential to the great tapestry that is the DCU. Things like Pérez's Wonder Woman, Rucka's first Wonder Woman run, Johns' GL, the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire JLI, the golden age Captain Marvel, Hellblazer, Morrison's Animal Man, Hitman, and so much more truly essential stuff. In the format I chose, I had limited room for what I suggested.

I agree Flash of Two Worlds is essential, but ultimately I gave the edge to some other stories for either artistic or historical importance. That includes an issue from O'Neil/Adams' Green Lantern/Green Arrow run (#76) and an issue from Kirby's Fourth World (The Glory Boat!).

At the end of the day, Morrison's Animal Man is of greater importance to the larger history of the DCU than, for example Supergirl - Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade, but I wanted some diversity in my options.

[Also - I edited my list to include Cosmic Odyssey, and put COIE at the end.]
