to spend more to at least make an attempt to make them look good, no matter what some people think of the end result. And more people watched TV in those days so they had more money to spend
    on Smallville.
Supergirl got a big viewership on CBS on the first season, though, but the show kept losing it more and more so it got cancelled. When the show moved to the CW, most of its CBS audience didn't follow it.

Smallville kept its big viewership a lot more constant through the many years.

Technically Supergirl does take place on another planet. Earth-38. But I know what you are getting at.

One of the problems is the CW is a smaller network, less affiliates. So it's not that some of the Supergirl audience wouldn't follow Supergirl to the CW. It's that they couldn't follow Supergirl to the CW.
Also although Supergirl had a big drop from episode 1 to episode 3, after that Supergirl stabilized and the audience for episode 20 wasn't really all that much smaller than for episode 4. Yes, it was less,
but most shows do lose audiences in the spring, when people are more inclined to go outside than they would in the winter time. In November Supergirl's rating was a 1.5. In April it was 1.3.
Part of the reason the 1st episode of Supergirl was so high was it followed an episode of The Big Bang Theory, and that was a huge show for CBS, so lots of TBBT viewers stuck around for Supergirl.
The 2nd episode on, Supergirl led the night. So of course there would be a drop off as the TBBT residual fans stopped watching. The reality was Supergirl was one of CBS's highest rated shows,
but it was expensive and didn't really fit where CBS decided to go. So instead of cancelling Supergirl, CBS moved the show to its other network. (The CW is owned by CBS and Warner Bros.)

Sorry to bump the thread, but my friend who also watched wonders what would happen if Seg-El didn't resist Brainiac's possession, and considers the idea similar to evil TOM 2 from Toonami's "Trapped in Hyperspace" game. Just for that, I'm kinda adapting Krypton into my ideal DCU, and have "evil Seg-El" a thing, instead of Parallax Hal Jordan. (Spoiler alert: he ends up dying, WHILE Jor-El is still alive, so Supes still exists. Supes flies round the Earth to change history so Brainiac didn't even TOUCH Seg.)
