Default X-Characters by the Number of Appearances...

I was curious as to which X-Men related characters would be in the top 150 in terms of most appearances, so made this list using Marvel Database (with a little cross referencing in Comic Vine). A few surprises for me (Cannonball's appeared more than Gambit, Apocalypse not as many times as I'd have thought, Hank edges Cyke out). I rounded up to the teen numbers (for example, Storm's had 1804 appearances, but I put 1810).

This list isn't 100% accurate - but I think it does give a very good sense of how often these characters are used by Marvel. [If we're thinking solely in terms of the X-books, in the case of Namor, Wanda, Quicksilver, Beast, and even Wolverine, it's a bit misleading, because they've had substantial appearances in Avengers books (and in Namor's case, FF and solo books too).]

Did I miss anybody? Apologies to Goldballs for not making the cut!

EDIT: My bad - I forgot Arcade, Bastion, and Shadow King! I edited the list - that pushes out Darwin, E.V.A., and Honey Badger. Please let me know if I missed anyone!

Interesting. I do wonder how accurate the list is without curation. ComicVine tends to count reprints, and collected editions as unique appearances. Oftentimes they also count translated editions. I suppose they all still count as appearances in unique issues, but individual stories would feel more accurate to me. Granted, that would take a while to sort out.
Continuity, even in a "shared" comics universe is often insignificant if not largely detrimental to the quality of a comic.

Yeah, Comic Vine isn't that reliable - to clarify, I used ComicVine to to give me an idea of which characters appeared most in each volume of Uncanny, X-Force, etc. Then I looked those characters up on Marvel Database (https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Marvel_Database) to get their number of appearances.

It's curious how high Namor is on that list.

Between his original comic run in the 30s and 40s, his recurring role in FF and some X-books, his stints as an Avenger, his various guest spots, and his later solo runs by Byrne and others...it adds up!

Weird that wikias don't count Age of X & Age of X-Man appearances, because they're still the same people.

If it didn’t happen in an X-Book, then it didn’t happen.
So get rid of Namor, SW, Beast and FLOPsilver.

Ah, wasn't sure of the process. Thanks. Some of those numbers seem fishy, but it's not as easy a thing to figure out as one might think. I have to imagine there's nothing meaningfully distinct about alternate universe counterparts, and their appearances.

    They're counted as alternate universe.

This is also why Beast has more appearances than Cyclops. Beast has additional appearances because he was an Avenger and Defender. Due to the time displaced versions, which the wiki lists as AU but we now know to be the same characters, and Scott's involvement in Champions, I think Scott would actually be slightly ahead of Hank.

I meant that they should all be considered “616” characters. Age of X was just Legion trapping them in an altered reality and Age of X-Man just has the 616 characters with fake memories.

They should, but on the wiki, they aren't.

I got it from here https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Marvel_Database. Thanks for the link to that site! Looks like it has some interesting data.

True, the time displaced versions would definitely bump up the O5's numbers, and probably push Cyke ahead.

Yeah, agreed. It's definitely not perfect.
