Bigger Impact? XM:TAS, X-Men #1 vol 2 or Fox X-Men based movies and spin-offs

Simple question, in your opinion, which is more significant to the X-Men brand? The renowned cartoon, having the single biggest selling comic book of all time or the contraversial movies that have lasted almost 2 decades.

In my opinion the cartoon was what brought the X-Men into the spotlight. It was unquestionably popular, and made many of the characters household names comparable to Superman, Spider-Man, and Batman. But it didn't exactly change anything, it was a fairly accurate reflection of one of the comic's periods but didn't really have any effect on the source material. That's nothing to sneeze at.

The X-Men film franchise wouldn't exist without the '90s series having brought the characters into the larger public eye. The aesthetic, and narrative changes made for the film series has had a significant effect on the comics. For better or worse.

That's how I'm looking at the question anyway.

The cartoon. For sure. My little brother and I would wake up religiously to watch it. Every Saturday morning at 10am Central.

As a fan who came in with the old 6-player side-scrolling arcade game and Chris Claremont & Jim Lee’s X-men #1, though, I sure wish Jim hadn’t brought back the yellow and blue outfit for Wolverine.

Cartoon. Especially at a time where comics stores were struggling, and many would go belly up from the investment craze of the early 1990s. The lasting impact was felt for years. I remember comic book stores as late as 2005 with people asking why Jubilee or Gambit wasn't ALWAYS on the main roster, and who this "Kitty Pryde" person was.

X-TAS Cartoon, undoubtedly. The movies probably wouldn't have even been made without its success.

When I imagine the characters voices, it’s always the cartoon. Doesn’t matter how many times Jackman played Wolverine, in my head he’s always Cal Dodd.
