I'm going to go with the cartoon because it seems they brought in more long term fans, that are still X-men fans to this day. However i think that in the decades to come the movies may become more influential to the franchise.

The cartoon. Its the reason why so many of us even know what the X-men are

This. The cartoon was being made irregardless of the comic's sales.

I know nothing of a movie about the Xmen. I know of Wolverine movies.

The cartoon however has the lynchpin of my nineties childhood. And the dope theme song.

I personally find the cartoon horrid, but I guess it had the wider impact and that's a fact.

Not for me, though. I love the comic-books and I will always do.

Unfortunately more people saw the X-MEN movies then ever picked up a comic
The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-MEN with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn't be two Marvels.

You are correct. I knew the basic order they came out, and spoke too soon without going into depth in research.
(Any quibble would be about the few million pre-orders for all the various covers that must have come in during the summer of '91, vs. the timing of the deal being signed with Saban/Fox).

Is that theme a generational thing. I know a lot of people like it, consider it the definitive X-Men theme, etc., but from where I'm standing (as someone who didn't follow the cartoon), it's an okay but generic riff.
Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."

This was at a time where investors were buying tons of #1 issues so they could hopefully use them like the first issue of Action Comics (and eventually sell them for a huge profit). It's part of the reason the comics market crashed.

I feel that the cartoon has the biggest impact. Its theme still continues to get song covers after all these years. In fact, I'm disappointed that it has yet to be referenced in a movie.

Not a movie, but it was on The Gifted as a ringtone, albeit briefly.

I'll always love X-Men #1, and for me, that was a big deal that got me into comics, but for most of the people who love the x-men who are in theirs early 30's, i would have to say the cartoon

X-Men (vol. 2) #1, if only because the cartoon drew so much inspiration from it. If it was just between the cartoon and movies, I'd go the cartoon.

The animated series. I still occasionally watch clips from it online.
