I read this a few years ago. It was really good and I'm a bit sad it didn't catch on. It had a totally different vibe than anything else DC was publishing then or now.

    I liked the JSA mini-series from 1991.
    Especially the Black Canary issue.

The Huntress back-ups in Wonder Woman.

The Dr. Fate backups in Flash.

The Earth-2 issues of Secret Origins by Roy Thomas.

I'll second Guns of the Dragon. Fantastic little mini-series. I'm a big fan of obscure standalone series and one-shots, so there's a few I could mention.

I'll throw out a little Gil Kane goodness, the Talos of theWilderness Sea one-shot he did with Jan Strnad...

Doug Moench and Pat Broderick's Lords of the Ultra Realm...

and Moench and Paul Gulacy's Slash Maraud...

    are all worth checking out.

More recently (well 6-7 year ago now) was the four National Comics one-shots DC did, including Madame X, Rose & thorn, Looker and Eternity. Each was a set up for potentially more but stood on its own. I was sad none of them were picked up for more. There was some great talent on these, but they seemed to get overlooked by most DC customers.

Some one else mentioned Star Hunters, and I will second that one as well. From the same era..

The original Stalker series featuring art by Steve Ditko and Wally Wood, sadly it only ran 4 issues...

and the swords and science series featuring the original Starfire...

David Michelinie wrote both Starfire and Star Hunters and there was to be a link between the two using a Moorcockesque Eternal Champion motif, but neither lasted long enough for it to fully materialize int he stories.

Another favorite from around the same period, though predating all the above, were the DC adaptations of the Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories set in Lankhmar in the Sword of Sorcery title (though the first appeared in a DC book in Wonder Woman #202).

these featured early work by Howard Chaykin, Walt Simonson and others.

Dark Horse reprinted the Fafhred and the Grey mouser a few years back, and it was a great little collection. Everybody involved adapted them super well!
