Default Yin and Yang—Avatars of Chaos & Order: The Hawk & Dove Appreciation Thread 2019

I can’t believe it’s April and no one has created a thread to celebrate the politically inspired, Chaos & Order avatar superhero duo of Hawk & Dove.

Originally conceived by Steve Ditko in the Vietnam political divide of the late 60’s, these characters were diametrically opposed from each other, yet their difference in methods seemed to compliment each other. Having a 6 issue ongoing in 1968, they’d go on to making appearances, and joining Teen Titans West, until Crisis, where Don (Dove) Hall would die. Hank (Hawk) Hall would continue to make appearances in the NTT, seemingly unhinged, spouting Reagan era Cold War “American values”, while suffering a nervous breakdown, missing the balance in his life from his brother’s demise.

In 1988, the Kesel’s and Rob Liefeld would join forces to launch a new 5 issue mini, introducing Dawn Granger, who would become the new avatar of Order, and the new Dove. It was in this mini that they’d learn they were the avatars of Chaos & Order. This mini would prove so successful, DC would launch them into their eponymous 28 issue ongoing that would last until 1991. They’d make sporadic appearances in other titles over the years, until Hank descends into madness, and became the villains Monarch, and Extant, until he finally died.

A few years later, and after a duo was launched that had nothing to do with the previous incarnation, Dawn would return as Dove, along with estranged sister, Holly, who would become the new Hawk. They’d go on to a few adventures, until Holly would be murdered by Black Lantern Hank. Hank would be resurrected after that event, and they’d join the short lived Birds of Prey, until the New 52 would return, in a series written and drawn by...Rob Liefeld. This too didn’t last very long, but now you can see them in the Titans show that’s streaming on the WB app.

Hawk & Dove might be getting their own streaming spinoff show, as Doom Patrol did.

Since their powers are primal forces of magic, I think I’d give them some more powers. Nothing too over powering, because they’re supposed to be minor representations, so maybe an affinity to be immune to a lot of forms of magic. Maybe give them passive empathic powers. Dawn would make people more calm, and at peace while being around her, while Hank would make people more aggressive, and impulsive. I’d also upp their villains. Make them avatars of Montu and Sekhet, the Egyptian god and goddess of war.

Don Hall was an awful character. A street fighting pacifist is just an awful idea conceptually. It made him seem like too much of an idiot.

Holly wasn't around long enough for me to really judge.

The Kesel series is one of my favorite comic runs ever. Loved the supporting cast!

My favorite version of Hawk & Dove were the Granger sisters, and I hope someday Holly will be properly brought back to the DCU.

I have high hopes that DC has plans to expand their role in tv, which might help make them more relevant in the comics too. So much potential, yet they haven’t found creators to properly explore that potential.

I think his death is unnecessary. He could be a angelic character who assits H & D...his name would be Peace.

Don’s soul could be the new host for the Spectre. The internal struggle between the two states, a former host for the lords of order, with God’s wrath would make for some interesting storytelling. I’d also love to see Eric and Linda Strauss as part of the books supporting cast.

Holly Granger was the only Hawk that wasn’t completely annoying and an insufferable *******.

Even though I prefer Hank and Don Hall as Hawk & Dove, I don't think the writers at the time did them justice. I think more could have been done with Don Hall/Dove. I think he could have absolutely worked well as a proactive and capable hero who used non-lethal but effective tactics to curb violence. The writers at the time simply equated pacifism/non-violence with weakness and/or uselessness.

The writers for Hank and Dawn definitely understood the difference and had Dawn/Dove be a fully capable counterpoint to Hank. I think Hank and Dawn were the most effective interpretation of Hawk & Dove. I thought the mini-series was especially good (even Liefield's art was good). I enjoyed the series and like the evolution of Hawk and Dove's abilities after absorbing their respective Lords of Order and Chaos. Too bad DC went and messed them up with stupid Armageddon.

While Holly was not around long enough, I did not like "I'm Dawn, Your Sister" appearance or the offensive British accent she had. I'm glad they killed off her character. Dawn's better without her.
