So my wife is not a comic book fan. Her knowledge and understanding of the characters comes from me and the movie adaptations that she's seen. I feel the need to preface this thread with that statement before I get into things...
I am admittedly more of a DC fan than a Marvel fan. I love both company's comics and characters but Batman brought me into comics and Superman is my favorite character, so I tend to fall more into the DC side of things than Marvel. In fact, I will say that I enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe significantly more than I do Marvel comic books, with some exceptions.
Upon watching Shazam last night with my wife, I noticed she was dozing in and out throughout the movie, which surprised me because I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was one of the best DC-based films ever. Also, considering she loves the Harry Potter universe so much I thought Shazam would be right up her alley.
She did like Aquaman (although I think Jason Mamoa had a lot to do with that) and Wonder Woman, but also fell asleep during Batman v Superman and Man of Steel. She enjoyed TDK trilogy but outside of the times I've watched them with her in the theaters she's never been inclined to watch any of them again.
However, she absolutely loves the Marvel movies and has seen those with me multiple times, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Infinity War, and Captain Marvel. Doctor Strange is her all-time favorite MCU film. She can probably explain the Marvel movies timeline and plots better than me.
I've been contemplating whether this is because Marvel Studios has done such a great job with building its universe for a casual fan, or if this is an indication of how relatable the Marvel characters are versus DC, and if so why the DCEU has been struggling so much versus Marvel. Now, I fully understand that BvS and MoS were divisive films and probably not a good indicator of someone's like of DC properties. But again, Shazam I thought would be a perfect showcase film for someone with my wife's knowledge of comics as well as her love of magical-based stories but it didn't maintain her interest at all.
Should this be chalked up to the MCU just being a runaway powerhouse right now or is it something a bit deeper?
